Not long to wait now to see who will be Sec of State for Transport, but CG will thankfully go. There have been three previous female ministers so not breaking new ground to appoint another one. However given Boris has committed to infrastructure spending, the transport job may take on a higher profile. With HS2 likely to be deferred, expect the focus to go onto East West Rail with the start button likely to be pressed in the next couple of months, with planning for the further stages accelerated. EWR ticks all the boxes unlike HS2.

The BBC has just said Chris Grayling is out of the Cabinet ("allowed to resign") - along with many others.
No doubt more to come.

from the BBC web site:
BBC political correspondent Jonathan Blake says Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has left cabinet.
A source tells him that Mr Grayling said goodbye to his staff this morning and told Boris Johnson he didn’t want to continue, despite his backing

Concerning thing was Boris was willing to let him stay in cabinet at all after the last 3 years in transport!

Just been confirmed that Chris Grayling has been sacked

Source Guido Fawkes : https://order-order.com/
It actually says 'quits', slightly different.

Hmm!

If that's the case it will just top off what has been a momentous day. Just wish the weather would cool down now.

(Copying over my rant from the previously locked thread - here goes) :

I disagree with a lot of what Lord Adonis says nowadays, but I'd give my left kidney to have him back in the post. At least he actually understood what trains do. Now we've got a man who ignores every consultation and warning that comes to him and pushes ahead with:
  • unwanted service route changes including a number of direct London services being cut and other services curtailed or split
  • over-engineered and therefore over-budget electrification
  • the subsequent cancellation of other much-needed electrification projects
  • disastrous timetable changes forced through by the DfT without the slightest consideration of TOC and public concern raised in consultation
  • a forced move towards bi-mode rolling stock to gloss over the chronic under-investment in electrification.
  • a multi-billion pound cash pit in HS2 which, whether you agree with it or not, has not even begun construction yet despite sucking investment from the rest of the rail budget, a trend which will continue for at least another decade (disclaimer - I actually agree with it's construction, I just think it's disingenuous to claim it's not having an effect on the DfT's spending elsewhere while other much-needed network upgrades are being curtailed or cancelled left right and centre)
  • The blind ignorance and failure to acknowledge the Government's complicity in the latest East Coast franchise fiasco.
I'm only in my twenties so I don't have that much to work with in living memory, but there's no contest - Grayling is a joke of a Transport Secretary - not just for rail but roads as well, and comfortably the worst I remember. A few shiny bypasses do not gloss over the complete lack of joined-up thinking and the DfT's abandonment of duty in rolling out the Major Road Network (MRN) then leaving local authorities to clear up the mess and work it out themselves. Hearing him brag about that in particular at the conference and take credit for the MRN's quote-unquote "progress" left a very sour taste in my mouth, because the DfT if anything have hindered the chances of it being a success through - you guessed it - regular dismissal of recommendations and consultation concerns, in doing so defeating the point of creating the joined-up, consistent network they claim to want.

He needs to go and never infect a post of government office again. The man is a tool, and by all accounts (including from those I know in my organisation who work with and regularly meet him) repeatedly ignores the advice of stakeholders, partners and third parties.

Adonis now is very anti rail. He proposed moving rail freight onto roads in automated HGVs again. Instead I think McLoughlin, who was quietly competent but got the job done (and started getting rid of Pacers) should’ve remained in the role.

Though I wouldn't hold your breath for any great improvement with his successor.

It will be interesting to see what the press say about him and his tenure as Transport Minister as time goes by. Perhaps another scandal breaks on the likes of the Probation Service and the mess he left it. Regards the new Minister, I am not holding my breath with anticipation of all the wonderful new projects proposed...

Thank god, finally.

Maybe we can actually spend some money on improving the transport network rather than endless blunders...

Also, perhaps if his replacement can actually spend money doing at least one thing, rather than Grayling spending the funding for three, to cancel ten and go ahead with one, then things might actually start to improve!

I will be interested to see how the new incumbent advances on the £49,700,000,000 funding settlement for Network Rail routine operations, maintenance and renewals in England and Wales in Control Period 6 (issued by Chris Grayling as the Statement of Funds Available in 2017).

The new enhancements ‘pipeline’ structure is primed and ready to go under Andrew Haines. Just needs some actual cash to make it work... (over and above things already budgeted, like finishing Crossrail 1 and HS2)

I understood £10 billion was available in CP6.

The DfT has specifically held off making an announcement of any details.
Looks like it will figure in the new infrastructure spending Boris has promised.
The government departmental spending review is also part of the next budget round.
At least we know Sajid Javid will be Chancellor, and Liz Truss (who owned the spending review) has moved on to International Trade.

Grant Shapps believed to be heading for Transport SoS, according to the Beeb.
MP for Welwyn Hatfield, former Conservative Party chairman, no former transport experience that I can see.
Definitely a Tory insider and a "safe pair of hands".

Edit: Confirmed.
