Anyone able to confirm what state 142045 is in? It apparently suffered some damage due to an OHLE issue at Guide Bridge earlier this week. Just superficial damage to the route indicator or something a little bit more serious (even mildly so!) affecting the roof, which given the current prospects of the fleet, could well prove fatal...?

Perhaps what Northern should have done is kept the seats from the trains they are refurbishing and stick them into the the ex Merseyrail and ex First North Western examples.
The only refurbished units that are having the seats replaced are the 158s, and that work has barely started. Hardly worth it for perhaps a six month stay of execution for the Pacers, though really the previous Northern franchise should have undertaken an Arriva Trains Wales standard of refurbishment of their 142 fleet to bring them all up to a common standard when they still had ten or more years ahead of them.

Spot on Sprinterguy......but if some are going to be staying for longer than 6 months maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to bring them up to standard......with the Leasing company paying the costs. After all, I bet they have made an absolute killing over the years on these units.
I know its slightly off topic, but the best Northern refurb in my opinion is 158752.......I think!

Hahahahaha..........none Karl....at least I'm honest! I'm hoping for better luck when I head to Nethertown in a couple of weeks!

(Apologies for being totally off topic mods.)

I love Nethertown and the walk from Braystones along the pebbled beach. Tight lines!

I guess it makes sense. The best of a bad fleet + all based in one depot + slightly more capacity than 8 x 769s. It will be interesting to see if 153s will be kept longer too. Still looking like a batch of 142s will leave Northern next month, which is a good thing!

I don't feel it is such a good thing. During the hot weather, I have found the 142s the most comfortable units to travel on sat on the bench seats near the doors with a breeze coming through them. Modern units have AC that does not always work properly such as on the 158s.

Yesterday, I travelled on one of the new Class 195s between Manchester Piccadilly and Wigan NW. I am very disappointed with them; the doors closed themselves when people were trying to board, a lot of people had luggage and the gangways were not wide enough, the toilet was broken. Due to the narrow gangways, it was very stressful trying to get past people to get off. All recent rolling stock seems to be built narrower than the full rail width of 2.83m and narrow gangways are a problem. This applies to 185s and 350s as well. Gave me a Pacer any day.
You can still have 23m length carriages with a width of 2.8m.

So 142096 which is the one with rot visible around some of the saloon windows is not amongst the first to be withdrawn. I hope, therefore, it may be in the second batch to be withdrawn.

Heaton have around 7 158 units. I would expect more to be allocated as it is expected that Heaton will get all the 16 Perkins engine fltted examples eventually. Though in truth you will still see NL units regularly operating around Newcastle and the North East.

Just wondering when this persistent South Wales rumour will stop. Even today, TFW have NO knowledge of them but the suggestion is going to be put to them.
Assuming it's an unfounded rumour, I expect you'd have to wait until the latter end of August for sanity to return.

(I have wondered whether someone in the upper echelons could be making inquiries, while the shop floor staff haven't been told anything in case nothing happens.)

I believe that the northern 158/9’s will make up the Heaton based 158’s fleet

How many 158s do Heaton require? They currently have 35 142s allocated but are supposedly gaining additional 156s. Will be interesting to see if Heaton units will have diagrams across Yorkshire as they do now, or whether the ECS moves up and down the ECML will cease

Indeed. Those should be the first ones to be gotten rid of.

It would be interesting to know why they haven't been.
The hit list might be just those units nearing major exams, or any with known defects which would be costly to repair: any which are non-multi at one end would be worth getting rid of, for example.

Probably in better mechanical condition. I recall that when the previous Northern franchise put a number of 142s in warm storage back in 2007, ex FNW ones were stored first due to this reason.

The whole interior ought to count as a defect :(

Yes, when they refurbished the Merseyrail units, they should have just put new seat cushions on the original seats (as they did with the FNW ones) and saved some money in the process!

I'm not really surprised that it's Heaton that going to see the first 142s withdrawn. There's starting to be a critical mass of non-Pacer units gathering there with 158s and increasing numbers of 156s. Still, exciting times with the first 142s on the way out!
