Anyone know the history of Eastfield Depot's logo? I'm told it started life as part of an advertisement for the WHL on printed material before spreading to the small fleet of boiler 37/0s and subsequently the depot itself.

According to some, Eastfield actually started off the depot mascot tradition, any truth to this?

I found a post on RMweb https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/125810-scottish-depot-emblems/

The emblems started life as a symbol for each of the Area Maintenance Engineers (AME) that had loco allocations:

AME North (Inverness) Highland Stag
AME East (Haymarket) Castle
AME West (Eastfield) West Highland Terrier (NOT a Scottie dog)
AME South (Shields & Motherwell) Salmon

The AME South West (Ayr & Corkerhill) had no main line loco allocations, and no official logo.

How much truth there is to this, I don't know. I certainly remember seeing the Westie before any of the others, although the Highland stag certainly became a regular sight when they started to use the Highland Rail branding. I don't ever recall seeing a Haymarket castle, though.

The terrier was painted on at least some of the class 81 fleet toward the end of their lives. Got a vague memory that some of the 85s may have carried them as well. Both used to turn up at Lancaster on Glasgow-Birmingham services

Nice find GusB!

Wasn't that the Motherwell Salmon logo?

When the 158s were new each vehicle had a sticker above the cab door with the castle logo and the legend “This vehicle is maintained by Haymarket sprinter depot”. Some of them retained it until very recently.

I honestly cannot recall seeing the castle logo, although I must have encountered it at some point over the years. Maybe it's because most of my journeys would have been on Inverness - Aberdeen and then either Inverness or Aberdeen to Glasgow - would these journeys have been covered mainly by Eastfield and Inverness locos, which would explain why I only saw Westies and Stags?

Just a suggestion, but perhaps the thread should be retitled to allow a wider discussion of other depot "mascots". It'd be a shame to confine the discussion to just the one, and has already drifted slightly off-topic!

Was Motherwell the only depot to change its logo? I know Stratford had a few different versions of its cockney sparrow but Motherwell changed theirs completely from a salmon to a hammer and anvil.

As for where it all started, the St Blazey lizard must be a contender for the first. If not the first it was a very early one.

I do love a depot mascot. The Stratford Cockney sparrow was one of my favourites, but there were others too.
How about the Cornish Railways 37 with the wee lizard on them?
Or the Tinsley snail that appeared on some of the Peaks after they were transferred from Toton?
Plus the Gateshead 47s that had the little coat of arms above the number...

Edit - Just read Bertie’s post above. Cornish Railways must have been one of the first, but some of the Welsh allocated DMUs had a red Welsh dragon applied to the front, and they must’ve been quite early on too.

Eastfield had two of the terrier. The first was the standard commonly seen, the second was the diamond side profile type used on Railfreight locos.

Now the diamond style Railfreight/Civil Engineering ones are whole other thing. The Lizard of St Blazey was nice, but the Laira one (featuring the Mayflower) on the side of 50149 was really lovely:

Class 81s had a fish. I don't recall anything on the 85s.

That was the AME South salmon as applied to Shields allocated locos and mentioned in the first post. The salmon has a ring in its mouth because it came from the coat of arms of Glasgow (here’s the tree that never grew, here’s the bird that never flew, here’s the fish that never swam and here’s the bell that never rang.)

I seem to remember that Thornaby had a rather nice Kingfisher logo?
And another one I remember was a little Hare on March allocated locos.

The terrier and the Haymarket castle were used on DMU stock in addition to locos. The centre car of any 3 car 101/107 in blue/grey got them.

I cant recall any SPTE orange units getting them but I am sure it must of happened.

From some of my 47 photos, I see a metal cabside Tinsley Yorkshire Rose, a full colour Thornaby Kingfisher and a metal cabside Immingham Star.

When Eastfield depot closed they held a farewell dance under the banner " The Dug has Died" with the emblem upside down

Only Class 81s had fish as they were allocated to Shields Depot - Class 85s certainly did not carry them.

I remember Terriers on the DMUs but I don't recall ever seeing the Haymarket castle.

Can read about the Railfreight depot logos here.

InterCity Depots also had some badges created just before privatisation - I have a set of badges but need to take some pictures. Interestingly there were no badges for the East Coast depots though.

Few more can be found on the Hattons site. Never seen the South Wales Sheep or Tinsley Snail before!
