Namely, the Southern one that starts at 10;00 .

I got one yesterday, just to have a day out in the sun in Sussex.

Why didn't it operate the barrier?

I explained to mesen that as I was trying to get through the barrier BEFORE 10am to catch a train that left at 10:06----- That is why the barrier wouldn't let me through. I have no problem (much) with this.

Gradually, the novelty of the ranger started to wear off. After having no exit/entry allowed, until the inspectors inspected the ticket at every start /stop, I asked the bods at Littlehampton, WHY?

Even inspectors can't answer. They did give a cloo...

There is no such station as "ANY SOUTHN TRAIN" That is what is printed just after LONDON VICTORIA.

Why can't SOUTHN change the barrier kit to read these tickets?

I did ask what would happen if you wheren't here to inspect me ticket and let me pass.

They replied, the barrier would be open.

At the end of my day yesterday, I'd only spent £20 on this ranger.

Did have a jolly good day out. This niggle didn't niggle me. Much. I suppose that niggles get worse in the end.

Can they get this ranger ticket to open the barrier?

I decided to leave this one in Sussex last night. Mileage and beers had been clocked up to acceptable levels.

UNTIL, I saw a couple of posts reg: fare payers (?) being done for not paying.

Not going to comment on them. I wasn't a non payer (for what ever reason)

I stumped up the £20 that they wanted. In advance. You have to this to get this ranger! Why didn't my ticket work the barriers all over Sussex?

The answer is because it is a relatively niche product and it is not worth their while programming barriers to accept it. It is relatively common for rangers not to work barriers.

Unattended barriers cannot be left with all of them closed.

I used a Central Scotland Rover bought as an m-ticket at the start of the week. First ticket examiner said he had no means to scan my ticket as they haven't been given scanners. All other ticket examiners and barrier staff accepted my ticket. However the point remains that Scotrail are marketing a ticket in a form that none if their staff can check.

The barriers at various stations where fitted with barcode scanners could not identify the ticket as valid.

That is BAD! Someone could fake tickets.

They REALLY need to look at this!

Maybe, I should look at it for them. Can't do. I am not good at net stuff.

Inspectors must look at loadsa tickets a day, which ones could spot a fake?.....

I have an ongoing issue at Hove station that my Advance tickets never work their barriers. I am also sick of a couple of staff insisting that I try inserting the ticket into the barrier even when I've told them already that it's not working it.

Did they sell these tickets before the barriers got invented?

If they did, somebody owes me an apology!

I was lucky yesterday. I clocked out of the barrier, walked to the pub. Had a pint or some more, got back to same station,

inspectors still remembered the daft Northern Olsod.

If you are suggesting that

a) all fake tickets will fail to operate ticket gates; and
b) all staff are unable to detect fake tickets by looking at them and handling them

then you are mistaken on both counts. I am aware of revenue blocks where all barriers have been set to block all paper tickets for manual inspection of fakes.

Did you actually experience a delay or problem at the barrier?

At stations like Leeds, my tickets rarely work the barrier so I just show them, and I probably get through quicker than if I did use the barrier. It's unclear if you experienced a problem or not?

Sorry to hear that. I was only there yesterday. Never been down that way before.

I need to retrain as a ticket forger/spotterer

If this has happened before, there is something that needs looking into.

I expect to be beaten to this. Not bovvered. I have a good idea every five years or so. Not good at getting the rights to them/

Some companies are better at coding barriers for Rangers than others. For example, the Northern Johnston Press £10 Day Ranger works many barriers at Northern stations but doesn't seem to work any Virgin or TPE ones. Similarly, the West Midlands Day Ranger works at Virgin stations but not Chiltern ones.

It's just they can't be bothered but that is hardly a surprise. The railway isn't exactly renowned for good customer service.

No MOD. What I am stating is,

REAL tickets paid for in advance DON'T work the barriers.

IF I wanted to turn the whole railway world upside down, I could try to fake a ticket and see how far I got.

On the upside, you think that I am so stoopid to video mesen doing crimes. Then posting them online. Plenty people have.

Like I said earlier, I am not good at net stuff. I usually get where I need to be. If it happens. It ain't me doing it.

Bought in advance? They already know who I am. Mainly cos I've already paid for the ticket.

Did SOUTHN sell this ranger BEFORE the barriers got invented?

If they did, somebody needs a kick.

NICHE item? Get somewhere else! This is a good way to have a jolly up. CHEAP!

I live in Swindon. I also hate the iep's. That is why I suffered five hours on a buzz yesterday,

alll the pain was still worth it !

I have a similar problem with Southeastern. Advance tickets rejected at my local station and at Victoria but only those where the Southeastern leg is part of a longer journey. Advances that are just for a Southeastern journey are fine. It happens irrespective of the time of day.

At Victoria they are so used to the problem that they don't tell people to try the barrier. I just say something like "Advance ticket, they never work your barriers" and I'm let through with a nod and usually no inspection of the ticket.

I've realised I made a mistake with my post earlier and have amended it; just to clarify that some fake tickets do operate ticket gates, so it isn't the case that requiring a manual inspection of (some) tickets makes it easier for holders of fake tickets to gain entry.

I don't think it's an issue if you have to show a ticket to a person instead of using an automatic gate per se; what matters is that the customer is not delayed (or mistreated) by the process. It's unclear if any inconvenience occurred or not in this case.

The OP has their answer as to why some tickets do not operate barriers and its not clear that there are any other issues in need of discussion therefore this thread has come to a natural conclusion and can be locked.
