Doubt that. 153's will be the first to go I'd say. Wouldn't go down well with anyone, passengers or crew, letting the 170's go before the dogboxes go to dogbox heaven.

Those surplus 153's would arguably do a job over here strengthening the snow hills in the short term.

Nope the 170s are first to go as they're due to go over the TfW. The next route to see the Flirts will be Norwich-Cambridge then Norwich-Sheringham.

The 153s will, if anything, be the last to go as they're not spoken for yet?

I found the "quiet" launch interesting, and it kind of reminded me about the somewhat quiet withdrawal of the D78 stock back in April 2017. Wasn't able to travel on the 755 today but hopefully at some point soon.

Just a quick question, could we see Greater Anglia running services that split halfway through the journey? I remember there was word of a direct LST-LWT service as part of the 755's being introduced. I just figured it would be interesting if a service like that was coupled up with something like a Cambridge or Felixstowe service; something similar to SWR or Southern running joint services.

But wouldn't it make sense for the 153's to go first before the 156's? Judging by the capacity and the ride quality of the latter.

But the 170s are spoken for, whereas no one wants the dogboxes, so they can stay until the end of the year.

I have placed into bold where you went wrong.

The railway does not allocate stock based on what makes sense.

The obvious candidate would be the Peterborough service, which used to be a through service to London until it was (rightly) decided that running a two or three car 170 into Liverpool Street was a poor use of paths.

However joining services is an enormous performance risk

Or join with the new third Norwich service?

I suppose until they resolve the issues restricting the use to just the one unit on a restricted diagram a quiet launch is the best approach.

They do look go though and am looking forward to them replacing the Sprinters. The 170s I’ll miss though.

With it being a big news day and everything going well, I'm surprised that the DFT haven't wheeled someone out or the minister isn't out for a photoshoot to take credit for the whole thing, like they normally do, playing up their role and down the role of the operator, like they always do on good news days.

Maybe they'll even start appearing when things under their control go wrong next and admitting their mistakes rather than watching the TOC get all the flack for something that was outside of their control. I know I shouldn't get my hopes up, though, but it would be nice if the DFT dropped the nationalise the praise and privatise the blame agenda.

Plans are afoot for a more public official launch in September according to internal comms yesterday.

If it involves guards it would be a definite no no & obviously drivers are not happy with any extra risk. Such a shame guards are not involved more but it seems the protocol unfortunately :'(

Any chance you can explain the method of operation of these trains on the Wherry lines? Assume it’s effectively DCO, with the conductor stepping onto the platform with a door under local control to do any needed passenger assistances?

Why the seeming love on here from some for joining up services? Quite a few routes over here on WMT have now had services combined etc.

2 months in, and how many long for the reasonable reliability of the old shuttle services? The majority.

Joining up anything to a GEML service is playing with fire.

The GEML already has several services that split in the peaks, and it's the only viable way to run a direct London service - using 3-car 170s in the past was laughable. I don't think an 8-car 755 formation would fit down many (if any?) of the rural routes.

Pretty much, except the doors do not have a proper local control, this only illuminates a light on the drivers desk, so the guards will inform the driver via cab to cab, or if the exit is unplanned, activate the passcom to prevent train movement.

Actually, it does. Just because people on here don’t know or don’t understand the logic, it is not done randomly.

You missed the joke my friend! I have spent many a year dealing with of the depths ROSCOs and other bits and pieces.

On the surface it would "make sense" for the 170s to stay at GA, but we know that they won't, for other reasons that also make sense, therefore it's not done on what necessarily "makes sense" to all parties.

Liv St to Lowestoft four times a day each way is a franchise commitment so from next year one assumes it will be implemented (May or Dec?) Running a single 755 won’t be the best use of a path even off peak so we’ll have to see how they are operated. Bury St Edmunds (pop 42,000) in particular must be the largest town in the SE (with a rail service) without a direct service to London?

The local (or 'de-selecting the rear coach on 170s) is permitted on 15X and 170 units but there is no guard input except if driver camera/screen equipment fails on 755s. As this method cannot be used at certain stations at the moment it's a known fault & thus the train cannot stop. During normal working the guards no longer have any responsibility for door operation on these new units.

It may yet happen but there are plenty of other franchise commitments for this particular franchise that have been wholly ignored, so something being a franchise commitment doesn't really give me much confidence it'll actually happen.

Would Great Yarmouth not have a bigger population?

Thanks for clarifying. I bet that makes the day drag a bit more for the conductor but at least they’re still guaranteed on every train.

It's the East Suffolk line stations rather than Lowestoft itself. A quite affluent part of the country with heavy flows to/from London. Yarmouth does not come in the same category & although several connect at Norwich, apart from Monday's, Friday's & Saturdays in Summer there are nowhere near as many.

Exactly, a London-Halesworth would do exactly the same job, there is a real invisible economic border after Halesworth with much less demand for London.

Just driven through Lowestoft, and the 37's are out to play!
I take it that they are used on an ad hoc basis?
