Wonderful stuff. Makes restoring diddy-little UK engines or faffing about building yet another replica's child's play. I understand though that the USA is less accommodating when it comes to running steam locomotives so there is little appetite or opportunities for replicas.

There are a few old steamers running here in the USA, but only one of them still runs on coal (the 261 https://261.com/). All the rest have been converted to Heating Oil #5. Steamers aren't generally used in revenue service because they are so inefficient, but occasionally if there is a breakdown of a diesel locomotive and an excursion steam train is running nearby, they will unhook the steamer and have it help out. It's the least they can do since they are operating on commercial rail line tracks for free.
