Any advice please on best option for an anxious traveller Alexandra Palace to Cambridge out Thursday 8 August morning after 10 am, return Sat 10 August afternoon? She has a Freedom pass and a senior railcard. I am thinking avoid Finsbury Park; prefer (cross platform, I hope) change at Welwyn Garden City. Does she need to bother getting Boundary Zone 6 to Cambridge & back tickets? I think Hadley Wood is the same price, and I can easily buy that for her.
After touching in her Freedom card at Alexandra Palace, does it matter that she won't touch out? On the way back, can she touch out at Alexandra Palace, even though she hasn't touched in?

Not touching in/out a Freedom Pass is not an issue.

So long her trains between Alexandra Palace and Welwyn Garden City do stop at Hadley Wood (they tend to) then Hadley Wood - Cambridge tickets are fine.

The trains don't need to stop at Hadley Wood for that ticket to be valid. (See the National Rail Conditions of Travel section 14.2)

They do if it's a Hadley Wood to Cambridge ticket, but they don't if it's BZ6 to Cambridge.

National Rail Conditions of Travel said:
14.2: If you are using a Season Ticket, daily Zonal Ticket, or another area based Ticket such as a concessionary pass, ranger or rover in conjunction with another Ticket and the last station at which one Ticket is valid and the first station that the other Ticket is valid are the same, then the train does not need to call at that station for your combination to be valid.

Freedom pass = "another area based Ticket such as a concessionary pass"
Hadley Wood to Cambridge = "another Ticket"

Hadley Wood = "last station at which one Ticket is valid and the first station that the other Ticket is valid "

Conclusion = "the train does not need to call at that station for your combination to be valid"

Just to note that while it will be cross platform at Welwyn on the outward journey, it won't be on the return. On the return they will be better off changing at Hatfield (where all London bound trains use the same platform).

No they don't. So it makes no difference in this case, if the price is the same (you only lose the flexibility to travel via Hertford)

That is right.

It has cropped up before: https://www.railforums.co.uk/thread...-stop-at-boundary-station.62790/#post-1038160

My mistake. Will amend post to avoid confusion.

Many thanks. Is it a good idea to change at (eg) Potters Bar on the outward journey?

For an anxious traveller, it would be better to avoid technicalities even if they are permitted, e.g. a ticket from a station at which the train doesn't call.
