Can you upgrade to 1st Class with a STD advance on TPE? I've read somewhere you can, but then when asking the question on the official twitter, i was told it's not possible.

As far as I'm aware you still can - they're not quite as draconian as XC are in those regards.

Their website says you can upgrade from a STD ticket. It doesn't specifically say ANY ticket, but neither does it specify that Advances are excluded.

Yes you can. There is no rule against it (unless it's been sneaked in very recently since I last looked) and I can't imagine any TPE Guard turning down your money (assuming seats are available of course)

I thought so, thanks Yorkie, i'm not all clued up on the fares as much as i used to be! I've tried to get reservations for the trains on the 24th but just been given a counted place reservation, the reason given was rail ale and the tight turnarounds.
