Australia have won the toss and will bat. That seems odd to me. England seem to be happy and want to bowl ( as Australia go on to knock up 257/1 at the close!)

In a random tangent we have Todd Woodbridge hosting the channel 9 coverage. Channel 9 haven't had the rights to cricket for over a year now and they still make some odd calls.

The numbers on the back of the playing shirt. Nope. Get rid of them.

After David Warner's year off he has decided to give back to cricket by giving England his wicket.

The review game however is up the creek. England stuff up 2 and Australia stuff up 1.

17-2. Cheat Bancroft gone caught Root, bowled Broad for 8. The departing batsmen was given a good send of Cherio and had squares of sandpaper waved at him.

This brings the key Aussie player to the crease: Steve Smith. He got a good booooooooooo on his approach to the crease but he is such a good player that we need to remove him sharpish. He is a brilliant player and a total limpit. (and a cheat)

Edgbaston needs some Behavioral Awareness Officers. They'll shut that booing up post haste.

No it doesn't. it is great. It needs more ale and more sledging of the Aussies. I thought your blokes could take this kind of stuff. Your captain said he wasn't bothered and didn't think the atmosphere was that bad and he could name 15 worse venues!

PS the thing that really annoys me about the sandpaper thing is that players like Smith are so good they don't need to cheat. Why do it? Why be involved? Why allow it to happen? So frustrating.

Well yes he's played at Marvel Stadium! That place has no atmosphere to speak of!

Smith's issue was he needed to lead and he didn't. If the story is correct he overheard what Warner was asking Bancroft to do it and he went "Nope don't want anything do to with that" and walked off.
I think after the De Kock incident in the stairs Warner didn't want to lose and went to any means necessary.

If I assigned blame it's
1st: Warner. His idea to sandpaper it. His idea to coax a young member in the side to do it and let him be a sacrificial lamb. His d**khead nature.
2nd Smith. The best leaders know how to deal with Warner's sort. He needed to lead and he failed.
3rd Bancroft. An idiot for saying yes but I get why did so. He wanted to get into the senior players good books. He'd no different to an apprentice doing anything to win favor with the boss.

Most of the Australian public thought this was going to get rid of Warner. We were all getting a bit sick of his crap.
But the 'Good bloke' rule gets him back in.

Absolutely! Bancroft is the one that I have a great deal of sympathy for. Yes he should have known better, he's an adult and a professional sportsman, he knew what he was doing was wrong. But considering he was the new player on the block and it was senior players who were encouraging him to do it? You can absolutely see why he did it.

Just a shame Australia have brought him back to the Test side, he's been very useful for us up in Durham

Australia currently 83-3 and Anderson is off the field and gone for a scan on his already injured calf. We're a bowler down already on day one...

He was the skipper. He set the tone. He allowed/facilitated it. He is accountable for what went on.

All three share the blame. Warner should have been treated more harshly than the others as he was the ring leader. They should have thrown the whole bloody library at him never mind the book. Smith should have been man enough to insist they stop. He was in the position of authority. By doing nothing he condoned the actions. The only mitigation is that Bancroft was the junior person in the group but he still should have known better.

Very conflicted over this. Clearly a good player playing for my team but..............

Indeed. His first words to Warner and Bancroft should have been "Don't even think about it" and let someone higher up know.

Warner should never of been allowed back.
Even after he came back his press conference is more stage managed and didn't sound genuine. Smith and Bancroft's sounded much more genuine.
But being a 'Good Bloke*' means he gets back in. Amazing in sport how someone can do something stupid come back with all is forgiven the moment they perform.

You'd have to question his selection given he only lasted 4 overs.

*Explaining a "Good Bloke"
Essentially is a sportsperson with mostly a lot of success. When they stuff up people often defend said person as being a good bloke, out of character ect. . Often all is forgiven when they perform well afterwards.

Smith really is a class act.
Pre sandpaper gate the amount of holes he dug us out of was staggering. It was him with the bowlers because everyone else was useless. No matter where we are it's the same old!

Aleem Dar is stinking it up massively at the moment. That's about the 4th decision he's stuffed.

There is no justice if Steve Smith is the reason that the Australians win the Ashes. No justice at all.
