Nothing official from NR regarding Ely. Though in a another thread it was suggested that if Norwich to Cambridge services are extended to Stansted..then there will be a power changeover at Ely. Not sure how accurate that claim is. If the 755s have such small fuel tanks as claimed - you might think every opportunity would be used to draw electricity rather than relying solely on diesel south of Ely.

yeah, given Ely-Cambridge and back is a 30 mile round trip, surely it must be worthwhile doing that on electric?

That could well be an issue, I can see. It will be interesting for sure in the peak hours, as will be the IC sets on my route to London

Is there scope to have the doors removed and then add new ones where they are supposed to be if they decide having only 1 door was a mistake

I know they do this type of thing with buses, when they get cascaded from London Transport duties they go back to Alexander Dennis and have the middle and back door removed and repanelled

Appreciate there is a big different between an ADL Enviro 400 and one of these new trains but just interested on peoples thoughts etc

It's still early days yet & expect more info out soon. Extension to Stansted should come with the December timetable all being well.

I think the centre carriages are only 16m long,so it shouldn't impact too heavily on dwell time compared to a 156
don't see it being a serious problem on the rural/regional lines, as for the 745 12 car sets, it will be tested in anger fairly shortly.

a lot of EU rolling stock only has 1 set of doors per carriage, albeit those lines don't have quite the same amount of footfall that liverpool street does.

it copes OK in Kastrup airport with a reasonably long dwell time.

cambridge-norwich is absolutely 755/4 4 car territory!
the 2 car sprinters/turbostars are usually rammed, and the 3 car 17x is generally rather cosy.

looking forward to seeing them on this route for sure.

Something like 8/9 return trips Norwich to Stansted on weekdays and all services at weekends are shown to run through from December.

It's a game changer & long overdue.

Tell me about it. The existing get on EMT service for minimum connection time reduced to nothing or missing the train at Ely due to ESRs and TSRs is rubbish for regular travellers.

Some news regarding electric to diesel changeover from.Network Rail:
reply
New square shaped, blue bordered signs are being erected at the appropriate Stop Car Marker Boards for class 755 bimodes.
A white Class 755 on a blue band tops the sign. Half of the remainder is Power Changeover (separate lines) in black lettering divided by a blue band from the bottom segment. All the latter have the yellow exclamation triangle on the LHS. The Diesel to Electric sign exhibits Electric and 25kV on separate lines to the right. The opposite changeover is topped by DIESEL in red lettering with Lowestoft beneath and Felixstowe below that in the example shown.
Locations:
Ipswich Down Pfms 2-4
Stowmarket both platforms for the different changeovers
Norwich 1-6 Up
Presumably reminder signs to pan-up/down will be provided at Ipswich/Nowrich in the opposite directions.

You wouldn't happen to have a picture(s) of these signs?

Might well be an issue with the number of EMUs in section between Cambridge North and Littleport at any one time. Only 5 EMUs are allowed to be moving in section at any one time due to ther way the line was electrified in the 1990s.

RTT is showing them in so hopefully no changes between now and December.

Didn't think platform 6 at Norwich was electrified

Its not wired.

I used a unit this afternoon, they're probably the best domestic trains in the country at this point. Very impressive.

Made a couple of videos of the engine room:
It's pretty mad in there!

Pretty sure that's been significantly upgraded of late, with the power (but not the platforms or junctions yet) being sufficient for 8 car half hourly services to Kings Lynn + peak time extras. Certainly whilst th off-peak Kings Lynn is still a 4 car, the Ely service (used to terminate at Cambridge) in the opposite half hour is 8 car.

And hopefully soon Norwich to Cambridge can go 2tph. The housing plans certainly justify it

When will SDO be working so the new trains can serve Brundall Gardens Halt? Or will trains cease to call there and a shuttle bus substituted?

Talk was September/October but messroom gossip on Wednesday suggested it will be earlier.

If they are using the 37 set for replacing broken down units they are failing.

Again today we have every other train to/from Great Yarmouth cancelled due to a train fault.

This service is a total disaster area - are they not maintaining the trains at all?

I cannot believe that someone else wants the old units as their "new" stock.

It's usual for almost all but essential maintenance to cease when stock is about to go off lease. That may be why the DMU's are failing more often

I suspect that you are right but this has been happening frequently for at least 6 months. It is so bad that I have friends who have given up getting the train into Norwich because the cannot rely on getting to/from work on time. Who cares about the passengers?

As the rail regulator I would be levying enormous fines if I could.

I guess it will make the new trains appear even better but this is supposed to be a service.

I’m not aware that it was every other train to Great Yarmouth, but certainly all of the additional summer Friday services were cancelled.

Is the fact that the Berney Arms route is shut impacting on the ability to run extra summer services?
My understanding is that the route was only retained because it isn't possible to fit everything onto the Acle route. Perhaps these cancellations are nothing to do with unit availability?

Additional summer only services are booked to sit at Acle as long as 14mins awaiting the other service to clear the single line. These would normally be routed non-stop via Berney.
