So better to prebook for 6pm onwards then?

When I went with two others we booked for 6pm and it was good. No queue at all to get in and the place itself was busy but there was always space to look at something directly. So I'd highly recommend an evening booking!

Hmmm... what about early on in the morning when it opens ( 09.30 I believe? ) as the idea is to do it before doing any sightseeing?

They open quite early (0800 or 0730) and till very late (2300) during the summer months, and 0830 to 2000 or 2100 during the rest of the year (or so).
Check (and book!) online via https://www.miniatur-wunderland.de/besuchen/planen/oeffnungszeiten/. You will even get in during the buiser times with only a couple of tens of minute of wait (in contrast to about 2 hours during the "morning peak" when buying a ticket there). If you don't want to book in advance, turn up after about 1700 or before 0900. (https://www.miniatur-wunderland.de/besuchen/planen/wartezeiten/ for expected waits)

Yes, I'm planning to pre-book. Want to get the hotel sorted first just to make sure I'm not going to leave us with a possible frantic rush to make the entry time by booking a hotel further away than I'm hoping to...

Hotel sorted. The Signature, relatively central, not far from the main station but unfortunately not overlooking it! Not too far from the attraction either.

I can only hope that your wife was in a forgiving mood when she read this.

I should be safe enough - she doesn't read the forum!

Anyway... following my post yesterday, I have now sent an e-mail to the hotel but I fully expect to find that Thomas Cook didn't pass the money on to the hotel so I'll end up paying again... <(<(<(

Edited: heard back... as I expected... Grrr...

It occurs to me that I should ask...

Any idea please, anyone, how much it costs on the train from Hamburg Airport to Hauptbahnhof? Plus in Germany what's the age cut off for child fares? One kid is 13, the other is 16...

In the Hamburg area (and in most other systems in Germany - AFAIK) the upper age limit is 14 (inclusive).
Depending on how many people you are in total and if you are doing other things upon arrival, a "9 Uhr Gruppenkarte" would cover all travel within the selected rings for upto five persons from 09.00 to end of service for €12,20.

And that includes the harbour ferries (go down to Finkenwerder at least) and the Hochbahn as well as bus/train to/ from the hotel.

It's four of us, but we'd only be using the train from the airport to the centre on our arrival date and the other way on our departure date.

Can I just say that the Miniatur Wunderland is in the part of Hamburg that I love, comprised of old red brick warehousing in the Hanseatic style* ... well worth a wander around these and the canals in the area if you likes yer architecture [Didn't go to Miniatur Wunderland because I likes me architecture more than I likes me miniatures ... sorry]

*I can't imagine that these didn't escape being zerbombt in the War and so they are probably rebuilt.

I went there several years ago, with a friend who has no interest in railways. I could've played trains all day long :D:D:D

10/10. Well worth visiting.

I did read up on the Hamburg Firestorm...the level of destruction to the city must've been on another level entirely.

But Speicherstadt survived.

In Germany, it is so difficult to know. It is an eternal source of wonder, the care with which the buildings that we destroyed are rebuilt and it is of little relevance to me whether they are original or not. The rebuilding of the cities of Hannover and Nuernburg are impressive enough but the recent rebuilding of the Dresden Frauenkirche is truly remarkable. The rebuilding of the Berlin Palace should also be admired but I personally feel that the Palast der Republik should have remained as a more important part of Berlin's history. It's a shame that more care wasn't taken over rebuilding in the Ruhr Gebiet. [Sorry to wander off topic]
