Transport for Wales’ Journey Check reporting cancellations “Due to a problem with a river bridge between Morfa Mawddach and Barmouth the line is blocked.” Anyone know what’s going on?

Apart from loss in time for on-going speed restrictions there seems to have been no cancellations of services at all today so far.

Have a look on TfW’s website. It is stated there, plain as day.

Ah yes silly me at not being able to understand that "problem" actually meant Fire!

It was more the point that the situation was only just developing in the railway sense. The 18:50 departure from Barmouth arriving, but not departing. However the information to the delay hadn't yet been identified.

I’ve not heard the engines from Dolgellau fire station come past, they usually pass my house sirens blasting with anything in the Barmouth and Tywyn directions

This may be a stupid question but why did you post something that was simply untrue?

Was it duff information, rumour or attention-seeking on your part?

It was true. It was, however, a fire on the pedestrian side of the bridge.

No impact on train operations after it was put out.

Ah yes silly me at not being able to understand that "problem" actually meant Fire!

The text for the delay reason is based on preset options within the software the TOCs use. As it happens - to the best of my knowledge - there is no option for “a fire on a river bridge “ (a fairly unusual occurrence...).

Sorry can’t work out the quotes thingy. From daily post below -

“A discarded cigarette sparked a grass fire which caused damage to a bridge in Barmouth.

Three fire engines from Dolgellau, Barmouth and Harlech were called to Porkington Terrace just after 5.20pm this evening (August 4).

The fire spread to nearby Barmouth Bridge causing one metre of damage.

Firefighters spent two tours tackling the flames before it was finally out at 7.16pm.

A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "The fire was caused accidentally by a discarded cigarette."

We could ask you the same question

Fortunately Highlandspring has a forgiving nature as well as being well informed, helpful and polite ;)

When I think of the distances that fire crews have to travel in places such as North Wales, I can't help thinking of that old film starring Rob Wilton as a fireman, when he's trying to round up the fire crew and he tells the woman reporting the fire 'ask them to keep it going' so there will still be a fire when the engine arrives, and then telling a crew member: 'It's a pretty big fire, well it should be by now.'
