I could certainly be wrong about this, as I am only going on what I have seen posted on these forums, but I believe the short swing link bogies would only be required because of gauging issues on the Netley line, and not because of the third rail. Haven't HSTs run Cardiff-Portsmouth during special events by reversing at Eastleigh before?

The short swing link bogie factor came into play when they worked the Weymouth Wizard so it is nothing to with Netley.

You definitely are wrong! Long swing link BT10s are barred from the whole of the Southern; that’s certainly what was in the Sectional Appendix last time I looked,

No, you’re the wrong way round. It’s the short swing link bogies that are essential for the whole third rail network. It is power car gauging issues that prevent use on the Netley line. Mk 3 coaches would be clear with the right SSL bogies.

Reversing at Eastleigh, or more usually running via Chandlers Ford without a reversal, avoids the Netley line (St Denys to Fareham) completely.

Just to put this one to bed, HSTs have been used on Plymouth and Swansea or Cardiff FootEx, running via chandlers ford and Botley, this was in addition to the standard 1Fxx services. There is YouTube footage of them passing Cosham

Unless someone ones to pull 10’s of £m out of there backside to resolve the gauging issues (either Bitterne or Bursledon, no one is quite sure), then it’s not going to happen. I do agree the stock would be perfect but wouldn’t happen.

There are only so many sets to be modified and workwise they are all accounted for so why bother to extend this costly modification project when it is unnecessary

Today (Sunday 4th) I saw a short HST working 2T45 Worcester-Bristol. This isn't listed in the diagrams thread, so was this a replacement for an absent DMU?

Probably replacing a Turbo Diagram and the Sunday working to tie in with the above post.

Just like to add I travelled on Saturday from Bristol TM to Cardiff on an un-refurbished, but in good nick HST GTI.

It was blissful.

Also reminded me how comfy a Mk3 is compared to an IET.

Is it the plan for the Cardiff-Taunton services to be HST's in the future?

HST 2+4 stop boards have appeared at Cheltenham Spa over the past week. I assume this means there will be at least one timetabled journey that stops/starts at Cheltenham. Does anyone know anymore about this?

One has been to Worcester today. See Post #1451

They've also appeared at Ashchurch station, I noticed one today but can't say how long it's been there.

In the future ? Most of them have been for months now. It sounds as if you travelled on one yesterday

I was pleasantly surprised to find one show up on my return from Worcester; particularly as on the outbound journey it was like a sauna in the 166?
The difference it makes to even a shortish journey is massive.

Any news on the next set to be coming out of Wabtec? It's been nearly 2 months since the last one with only 5 done so far out of 11 with the first one released in March last year so only 5 delivered in 17 months.......

I work near to the line which runs through Mexborough to Doncaster and often see trains going to and from Wabtec. Earlier today I saw a “classic” HST in First GWR livery going towards Doncaster and then later, I saw an HST going the other way.

I didn’t get a look at the livery of the second train, but I’ve only seen finished re-furbs going that way. Hope this helps.

Those are the Hull Trains sets swapping over for maintenance.

Really? I didn’t mention the token green GWR carriage in the middle of the first train, what kind of sheds are Hull trains running?

BTW Mexborough is between Sheffield and Doncaster, I wouldn’t expect trains to pass Doncaster to go to Sheffield and then go back past where I work. I’m quite new to this train spotting lark though.

They are hiring HST sets from GWR, hence the odd green coach in the set.

I see some weird and wonderful trains pass by, I just assumed that trains like that were going for re-furb. Still a strange route.

Went on a ‘Castle Class’ mini HST today with power doors, between Truro and St Erth and the interior ambience and comfort was far superior to the IET I had last week. The seats were so far superior in the HST it is ridiculous.

I did notice 2 points. The acceleration was nowhere near as marked as the IET, which you could actually feel pushing you back in the seat as it pulled away. Maybe the HST schedules do not require it?

Also, when stationary, there was a vibration that was visibly making the seats move. I was in the TGS. Would this be vibration picked from the adjacent power car?

Not really a strange route. The sets are still maintained by GWR in Bristol, so swapping them over means a long distance move from Hull to Bristol: Mexborough is on the most direct route.

Are these HSTs still capable of 125 or limited to a lower speed? Between Worcester and Bristol there’s a lot of potential running above 75mph!
