Hi all,

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned elsewhere, but today I saw 325001 in the engineers sidings at Nuneaton, which is quite a rarity as it usually just gets track machines. Does anybody know why it was there?

Thanks :)

It was there possibly Thursday morning and definitely yesterday morning in the early hours as I deliver the milk to the station café and noticed it in the sidings. All of the nights blur in to one by the end of the week.

90035 was with it yesterday (02/08), both with their pantographs down from what I could make out. Didn't look like they were coupled to each other either.

Presumably there would have been some concern over the load being carried by 001, as there are so few mail trains now I would assume that the other unit(s) would have been loaded to capacity, I'm sure that RM personnel would have had to attend and secure the load before the service could continue, with Crewe being relatively close if any replacement was sent I would think it would come from there

Having been involved with HABD incidents in the past I wouldn't think 3 hours was anything unusual for someone to actually get something sorted, a 325 sat on Peterborough platform a few years back for around 2 hours and all they needed to do was bring a loco out of the yard ....

It's to do with the Acton Grange blockade. Either to reduce electrical draw on the diversionary route, or because the diversionary route that is used is not electrified.

I suspect the former; the 90s won't be much use if it's the latter...?

I'm surprised that 325s aren't cleared given Pendolinos and Class 92s are. Both power hungry trains.

I've just been looking for some evidence on RTT and found this on Wednesday evening (31/7):
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P92190/2019/07/31/advanced
It implies that it stopped near Nuneaton at around 18:15 and spent nearly 3 hours in the vicinity before continuing.
Perhaps they uncoupled one set at Nuneaton and continued with the rest. Or maybe they sent a replacement unit from Willesden.
So I did see it in the early hours of Thursday, that's put my mind at rest!!!!

Might be a case of 'multiple pantographs', given that a rake of 3 Class 325s has 3 pantographs. 2x 350s (i.e. 2 pans) I believe is the maximum for the route.
They mess with certain track circuits as well.

I note that 325001 has made it as far as the Down side sidings at Stafford by this morning, hauled by 90035. It seems to be having an extensive tour of WCML sidings that normally only see track machines stabled!

Skating is a real thrill a minute business, I remember moving a mail van from Willesden TMD to Old Oak which took 2 locos, 2 drivers, a shunter, the obligatory Railtrack representative and an entire saturday pm /sunday am turn, I still have sleepless nights from all the excitement ....... I guess 001 should make it to Crewe tonight

What's the speed limit on skates?

I seem to recall 15mph and 5mph through points, it could be different now of course but I don't see why it should

Normally depends on the advice of the fitters present, some fitters prefer a faster speed(sometimes up to 25mph) with more regular checks on the skates, but 5mph on points is pretty standard.

"Of course I didn't forget your birthday card and present dear, I personally handed it to the postman and he put it on 325001"

Do you have 12 car 319 sets in operation on Northern?

No, but as far as I was aware the issue was purely to do with the number of pans raised on a 12 car rake. However I wouldn’t have thought they would mess with anything electrical as they are identical to the stock that already runs on the line regularly.

The way things are I would imagine that 325s would need specific authority to use that stretch of track as it's not part of their normal route, probably the use of a 90 saved an awful lot of head scratching and form filling for clearance as well as for any potential electrical implications

As an afterthought it may even be that there are no drivers that have that particular route on their card who sign 325s
