OK thanks. So I can get regional trains with my supersparpreis ticket as per the itinerary above? I might be a cheapskate and do this. And yes I'm travelling today. Thanks for all your help so far.
No, but a Quer-Durchs-Land-Ticket would be cheaper than anything valid on long-distance trains.

45 Minutes is doable, if the immigration officers are there when the plane arrives and you only have hand baggage (I had to wait about 10 minutes last week - possibly because my flight was early). At least the A&B gates have an exit marked "Handgepäck only" which let you avoid a detour via the basement. Head towards the front of terminal building, look for signs "Fernbahnhof" which should direct you on to the SkyTrain, get a Kurzstrecke ticket (1,70€, you could also buy it online) and get on. If you are on the Skytrain by about 1915 at the latest, you should have enough time to head for platform 5 at the station (all trains to Duisburg currently depart there).

If you have missed the train, instead of heading straight to the platform, nip into the "Reisezentrum" and ask nicely - if you are lucky (or the staff is friendly) you might get a stamp on your ticket allowing you onto any train. Your Sparpreis ticket is also still valid to Duisburg (the Zugbindung should be something like NV*Du-Hbf 1953 EC x, which means that it is valid on all Nahverkehr trains to Duisburg (all day until 10.00 the morning after!) and then on the 1953 only) so you could also try there. Flexpreis tickets can be bought on long-distance trains only, you will get no BahnCard discount and a 7,50€ surcharge with only cash or creditcards accepted. Better to buy a new ticket at one of the stations!

Thanks for all your help so far.
We do our best and at such a reasonable price too but I'm sorry to have to tell you that FlyBe are now estimating your arrival in DUS at 20:35.

You might just make the 20:55 as per above but the DB travel planner suggests your next connection would be:

Düsseldorf Hbf dep 22:52
Dortmund Hbf arr 00:11

Dortmund Hbf dep 00:22
Hannover Hbf arr 02:23

Hannover Hbf dep 04:20
Bremen Hbf arr 05:39

Ouch!

I think I'd be looking at hotels in Düsseldorf...

Tbh I don't mind getting the night train. I notice there's also an 0230 one which looks less bad in terms of journey time and only arrives about 20 minutes later. Given the lack of Zugverbindung on local trains I'm guessing we're I to get this I would only have to buy a ticket from Duisburg. Also guessing from other posts the cut off time for ticket validity is 3am?

That connection at 02:30 makes good sense but if I were in your shoes and earlier options were definitely out of the window, I'd buy a ticket in the terminal to Düsseldorf Hbf, get the Sky Train to the Flughafen station and see if you can get your ticket endorsed for that train then go to the Hauptbahnhof whatever they say. There's another Reisezentrum there which stays open until 22:00 and if you've failed at the Flughafen, there's no harm in asking again. What's more there are eating and drinking places there which stay open late plus you can pick up the same train there, IC2020 at 02:31 and travel through to Bremen with no changes.

OK, I've done a bit more digging - the DB Reisezentrum at the Flughafen is open till 9pm, so it depends when you get out. As a comrade said earlier, the one in the Hbf. will be open till 10pm. I checked out the taxi fare to Duisburg - if you arrive at 20.35, and got out quickly, you could conceivably catch the delayed 2053 (running 25 minutes late presently) ICE to Gelsenkirchen, or the 2110 Eurobahn to Gelsenkirchen as well. It would cost you €60 in a taxi to Duisburg, though, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you needed to be in Bremen by 1.10am.

I also checked out Flixbus - good news, there's a direct bus a 22.45 to Bremen from Dusseldorf - bad news is it's booked out.

Our poor comrade's flight is boarding - that's the good news - the bad news is that he's not now due into Dusseldorf till 2110.

https://www.dus.com/en/flights/flight-detail?flight=2286889

So it looks like the night train. The problem is that, unless he makes good time - there are only 3 trains an hour to the Hbf from the Flughafen, and he might conceivably be able to catch the 2128, the next one is 2150, which arrives just as the Reisezentrum closes at the Hbf:(

What you need to do in these circumstances is to find the conductor - if indeed there is one - before he (or she) finds you. They're generally sympathetic if you seek them out and show a willingness to pay. Bizarre, I know. I got all the way from Karlsruhe to Cologne Airport on 3 different ICEs (despite having only a RE/IC ticket) solely on conductor good will, as my original train had broken down, and I would have otherwise missed my flight

Alternatively, there is an Ibis Budget within walking distance of Duisburg Hbf for £40-odd, and you might still strike lucky with DB or at least get a SSP at the station (not online apparently). Depends on your deadline in Bremen of course!

Update - the flight landed at 20.35! The suspense is killing me. He might conceivably make the 20.55. There's a great quote in the film "Clockwise" where John Cleese's character states " It's not the despair, Laura. I can take the despair. It's the hope I can't stand"

Hi. The stairs took a while to arrive so only got into the airport building at 2050ish. Yes its the night train.. I decided to buy a flexpreis ticket from the TVM at the s bahn station. One slight disadvantage is it appears its only valid after midnight but for about €46 with the bahn card im now very glad I bought I'm not complaining too much. I'm getting the s11 to the hbf and then direct to Bremen at 0233. Whether this was the best option probably remains to be seen.
