Hi there,

I'm after a bit of information for one of my friends who will be having a medical for a trainee train conductors position soon.

At present my friend is taking 20mg Citalopram for anxiety, which they will declare at the medical but they are wondering whether this would flag as a substance which could cause them to fail the medical and therefore not be offered the job.

Any help would be great, saw some old posts on this site, but nothing was clear cut.

Cheers.

I’ve recently had my medical and had previously been on the same tablets and dosage. I advised them of being on them. They stated it would not of effected my ability to pass the medical taking them or if I ever started taking them again. They asked further in-depth questions but no more than a doctor would ask you.
Be open and honest and they will have no issue with it.

As above as long as your friend declares it there’ll be no problem. If successful and the dosage ever changes they need to let work know before their next turn of duty. EDIT: There are quite a few drivers I know that have been on antidepressants.

I’m on different ADs and had my medical today, was told a few drivers are on them and are just required to see doctor more often than other drivers just to keep check on how they’re doing. I was told I passed (drug n alcohol test pending but I know that’s clear lol) and I have to go back and see their doctor in 6 months. Also had to fill out a bit of extra paperwork to assess how severe my symptoms are. Doctor was super nice about everything and really put my mind at ease. I’ve been really anxious about going for the same reason but as long as you declare all medication u are taking then any abnormalities due to the meds in the urine test will be flagged as consistent with declared meds. Just be honest, they seem keen to help anyone with mental health issues excel and do well in the job. Good luck to your friend

I'm on sertraline 150mgs and had a medical. I was told that it's fine to be on it and won't affect it unless it is lone working... Which they don't allow anymore in many places anyway

The key is to be open and honest and you’ll find most medication is okay to take as long as it’s declared properly and won’t impair an employee.
