The company running Vienna’s public transit network, Wiener Linien, tested out an entire catalogue of perfumes on two metro lines in order to make them smell nicer for commuters.

But Viennese were not happy. Wiener Linien announced on Monday that they would be discontinuing the experiment after “most commuters voted against the initiative” — 21,000 votes against and 16,000 for — in an online survey.

I recall that a few years ago, Go North East put some sort of apple air freshening units at the front of buses.

They've since disappeared so clearly they weren't popular!

Disappeared because they weren't popular, or because they were very popular and got nicked?

They were very discrete and plastic looking little things that would constantly push out a scent, usually positioned by the doors.

Its possible people yanked them off but not because they wanted Eau de 309 in their homes

The Paris Metro is trying that at a few locations and it’s very welcome as the network basically entirely smells of (at least) piss.
Some buses in the Paris region have that too.

Central Trains had some air fresheners on their trains in the Birmingham area (I remember them on the 150s, not sure if any of the rest of the fleet had it). All I remember is that the trains smelt like someone had spilt a tropical flavoured drink.

Are you sure it's not just au naturale?

(Probably better than the burnt rubber smell of the Michelin-tyred lines though!)
