Hello. Very quick one please. I’m travelling priv rate from London Euston to Prestwick Town tomorrow with a change at Glasgow central.

I’ve just checked the ticket that I’ve been sold and it specifically states ‘Euston to Prestwick Strathclyde.’

I’m sure it’s valid just wanted to double check. All the prior online checks I completed were specifically referring to ‘Prestwick Town.’

I’m probably being pedantic I just want to make sure my ticket will be valid at the end destination.

Thanks

I can't see that there'll possibly be any problem. There are two stations called Prestwick - International Airport, and Town. You go through the airport station between Glasgow and Prestwick Town, and it seems to me that 'Prestwick' will mean the Town station.

The bit about Strathclyde is the 'region' around Glasgow, which includes Prestwick. 'Regions' are how Scotland did their local government for twenty years or so - rather like English counties, only bigger. So presumably it says 'Strathclyde' on your ticket to distinguish Prestwick in Strathclyde from all the other Prestwicks in the country with railway stations (or possibly from Preston (Lancs) and Preston Park (Sussex)).

Presumably Prestwick Town and Prestwick International are a 'group', like London Terminals, or Glasgow Stations, so that a ticket issued to Prestwick is valid to any station within that group?

Thanks for the replies.

I was probably over thinking it. But with all the mention of specifically ‘Prestwick town’ I got a little concerned.

I think, like you say, it will be fine. It’s just an all encompassing term.

That's a very interesting anomaly. Was Prestwick Town always called Prestwick Town, or was it previously called Prestwick and renamed to Prestwick Town when Prestwick International Airport station was opened, in 1994? If it was renamed, it could be that no one bothered to update the station name in the fares database, and it has stayed as PRESTWICK (STRATHCLYDE) (printed on tickets as PRESTWICK SCLYDE) ever since?

That is exactly the position.
Prestwick Town railway station, ... originally known only as Prestwick, ... was one of the original stations on the Ayr to Irvine portion of the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway opened in August 1839.

The station was simply called Prestwick from 1839 to 1994.

Prior to Metrolink conversion in 1991 of course there was a National Rail station at Prestwich (Lancashire) and I suspect the Prestwick (Strathclyde) was to distinguish it from this potential single digit confusion.

I expect that's also why it hasn't been changed to Prestwick Town, even after Metrolink conversion.

It doesn't explain why you can buy a ticket to "Prestwick Town" (on-line, say) and end up with a ticket to "Prestwick Strathclyde". The problem seems to have been that they haven't picked one name for the station.

In the fares data the fare location (note: not station) appears as
PRESTWICK SCLYDE
Prestwick (Strathclyde)

The shorter all caps one is for magstripe tickets in the "old" format (limited to 16 characters). The longer one is for magstripe tickets in the "new" format, other ticket fulfilment types (such as barcode) and should appear in online journey planners or on TVMs as the location to select to / from / via.

In the stations data the station appears as "Prestwick Town". This should be used when describing an itinerary that has been created as a result of planning a journey; for instance when showing train times on an online journey planner, a timetable; or on a TVM that does journey planning. It's also what would appear on reservations.

So you should not be able to buy a ticket to Prestwick Town online; only a ticket to Prestwick (Strathclyde). But any itinerary should be to / from Prestwick Town. Not that trainline.com (to name but one retailer) seem to be following even the first of those.
