At least two pairs of 458/5 were in use on Reading - Waterloo trains this morning. It is the first time that I have seen 10 car trains in use on service trains from Reading. I know it was part of the Stagecoach 707 cascade plan but I guess their current use relates primarily to the Waterloo block?

Yes, just temporary whilst the Waterloo works are taking place. They should have been starting to appear on the line by now anyway, but the 707 delays have put that back. More unusually, a pair of 458/5s worked the 2015 London Waterloo to Haslemere on Friday night. Certainly the first passenger run for a 458/5 there. I'm unsure if any 458/0s ever made it on a passenger service to Halsemere. (Excluding the farewell tour.)

Grrr, my train was arriving at Waterloo just as that departed! I thought it was some random ECS

For some reason, I thought they'd already started. Was somewhat disappointed last month when I had to go to Reading to find a pair of 450s on the line. I guess it shows how much attention I pay to what I ought to know :(

Maybe you saw a mention that they'd finished the route upgrades, power and platforms to allow for 10 car trains from May. But it was intended to be a phased change from May, which wasn't possible - no 707s yet...

Maybe, but being aware the 707's weren't running yet, you'd think I'd be capable of joining the dots and working out what was going on!

I noticed that first class had been reinstated on the 458s while travelling on a Weybridge to Waterloo service on Friday. This explains why.

Been on a couple of 458/5s this last couple of days (a bit of time in SWR land!)

Is there an issue with the aircon? The train I was on yesterday was quite warm inside, and I noticed today some 458s with their windows open

Yes, there is. It has been noticeably worse than it used to be. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that SWR have cut back on maintenance.

There is one of the ex-460 sets running around with the heating stuck on - there’s no opening windows on these. SWR’s solution? Open the vehicle end doors and hope the air from the next door vehicles flows through. I do not recall that ever happening under Stagecoach, and certainly not be left for days on end.

The aircon on the 458/0s would often fail during the summer, but at least you had hopper windows you could open. Obviously not possible with ex460 vehicles. That said the procedure about opening up the gangway doors is a fairly standard one and it also applies to Desiro stock.

Genuinely surprised re: the opening of gangway doors. On 377s there are strict rules about having operational gangway doors due to these being fire doors...

I imagine someone has completed the relevant risk assessment for doing this, but it's been like this for years at least since the Desiros first introduced 15 odd years ago.

A shame as they are otherwise quite nice trains. Are the seats similar to the original ones or installed during the 458/5 programme, as they are pretty comfy, especially when compared to the 707s operating similar routes!

Indeed, there are intumescent fire strips on each desiro gangway door for that reason.

The seats in the 458s are the original ones but in new layout with spacers between them giving more shoulder room (thank you to Ian Walmsley for that!).

Thanks, I thought they were too comfy to be recent seats!

On SWR 455s if they become defective they are often just simply removed pending repair or replacement with plenty of sets running around with them missing.

They're the original seats. You can tell the ex 460 ones because the backs are grey instead of beige. In general the full ex 460 units retain their grey backed seats, while the 460 trailers inserted into the 458s have the beige back seats rendered surplus from reducing from 2+3 to 2+2.

It's not unusual for internal doors on 377s to be open!
Appreciate that, but on prep from depot a train is not (supposed) to enter service if at least one side of the gangway is not fully operational. There are smoke detectors fitted to them that prevent the doors being opened by push button or sensor if the carriage is full of smoke, but they can still be opened manually to allow evacuation. This is one of the reasons the fire on 377442 did not spread.
