Hello,

With plans to re-open the Cardiff to Llantrisant line I've been looking online for info on the former alignment. I can't seem to find very much, does anyone have any good links or recommendations?

Thanks

Any plans you've seen are aspirations from private individuals.

There's no government/TfW plan to reopen that line.

Thanks although that’s not what I asked.

The private individuals concerned are currently Cardiff Council/Rhonndda Cynon Taff Council who have commissioned Mott McDonald to carry out a £130k study into options for re-opening!!

That's not quite true. The corridor through the new Plasdwr development "has been designed to safeguard a route for a South Wales Metro service" according to the developers own design and access statement and it also features in the council's LDP - a plan that was approved by the Welsh Government.

I suppose you could regard Cardiff Council, Redrow and a Government approved LDP as 'private individuals' if you really wanted but the plan has featured in the Metro propsals from the beginning.

It's true the line doesn't feature in the current TfW franchise deal but then nor do the Hirwaun extention or passenger services on the Swansea District Line, both of which might well happen within the current franchise period. The Welsh Governmend deliberately designed to the TfW franchise to be flexible so that additional lines and servces could be added to it during the course of the franchise. It works very differently from the very rigid franchises awarded by DfT.

Great news that the route has been protected, but that doens't mean it'll be built.

Just because they're in the Metro proposals doesn't mean it'll be built.
The Metro proposals (proposed by one individual) were effectivly accepted as proposals on mass by the Welsh Goverment. I'm afarid I want to see a little more confirmation beofre I belive it'll get built - and I do want to see it get built.

Ah Hirwaun Railway station, included in the 2011-2012 WG Capital Program and quietly forgotten about.

I'm not saying it will be - just that the plan has a bit more to it than "aspirations from private individuals". The mere fact the corridor has been protected is a pretty good sign that its under active consideration.

The main danger is that the route ends up being used as an 'active travel' corridor instead. It was a single track railway and I doubt if the formation is wide enough to accomodate both a railway line and a footpath / cycleway.
