Jeez, I don't know what to say, this page is an eye opener. See you all in the messroom,... er maybe.
Don't overthink it.

Going into my last set of policing duties before I start next month! Policing was my dream job, now my only ambition is to have a greater work/ life balance but where I can still continue my passion for public service & safety.

Yup, you will have zero regrets :D

Student jobs: cafe cook, librarian, supermarket butcher, menswear retail, till cashier, store switchboard & PA announcer.

Quit my unloved degree course to help my folks make ends meet after my dad got made redundant. Joined the railway as station customer service 15 years ago. Loved it, never left. Starting trainee driver course this year.

I was a postman. Sitting in my box as the rain lashed down this morning I can’t say I made a mistake joining the railway.

Joined the railway with a performing arts degree and an otherwise nearly blank CV and started climbing the ladder. Started in onboard catering, then worked at a station as a dispatcher and announcer, did 6 years as a conductor and now I'm having the time of my life as a trainee driver.

Food Retail, First Responder, Care Worker, Food Retail again, then something else for 11yrs.
Loved the something else, I genuinely did, I just wanted to be a guard more.
Even when I'm up at 3am n it's honking down with rain, with a 30min trudge to work, I'm so happy I'm a guard. It's the best career move I've ever made.

All sorts - Bar/Retail, call centre, then went into training. Fancied a change and the railway always appealed to me as I love train travel. Started as a conductor and now work training new conductors. Has its challenges and we are very busy but love my job.

Any ex bus drivers on here that have either just started training or been in for a while?

I had my coach licence, used it rarely. Never fancied actual bus driving as people tend to annoy me!! Train driver for 4 years now.

My background has been quite varied. I started in the water industry but increasingly found myself working on IT projects. After a spell in retail, I worked in consumer product marketing for 11 years for an international manufacturer of cameras, printers and photocopiers. Following self employment, I worked in manufacturing latterly in quality and health & safety. Then after that role became redundant I joined the railway as an Operational Planner earlier this year.

Student, McDonald's, Volunteering work both railway and managerial and now finally onto a proper job in the railway. All of this and I'm only 17 so I'm quite pleased with myself tbh.

Started my proper working career as a Licensing Officer with the council, dealing with naughty pubs and taxi drivers. Fun for about six months thereafter a depressing chore. Became a Platform Assistant, loved it until I hated it. Then became a guard and loved every minute and now I’m a trainee Driver! Not bad progress given I’ve been on the railway four years now. Hear about some lads waiting that long after applying
