Does anyone have a list of places where I can get a railcard added to an oyster card?

Also, if I have to use the oyster card before I can get the discount added, what will happen to the daily cap for that day?

A member of staff in the ticket hall area of any Underground/Overground station should be able to do it; they access a special mode at the Oyster top-up machines.

By overground station I assume you mean only those managed by London Overground, not just served by?

Yes, managed by London Overground as staff need to be able to access Oyster systems (National Rail stations have Oyster top-up machines but that's typically the only Oyster function offered)

Thanks. That just leaves the other half of my question about the effect on the cap if I add the Railcard in the middle of the day.

Any journeys made before the railcard is added will remain at the standard adult rate but I would expect that if you have yet to reach the reduced cap at the time the railcard is added, the system should then be clever enough to give you the reduced cap once you do then reach it.

It capped me at the Railcard level when I got it added after one or two trips once.

The next year, when I was making one journey that involved going through the barriers and I got the Railcard added when changing, it didn't give any money back.

It may seem obvious, but it wasn’t to me, that the Oyster card reverts when the Railcard expires.

All pretty much correct. You won't get any money back for fares already paid. The cap will be reduced immediately and if you've already passed it at that point you'll pay no more. It's always best to get the card added as soon as possible.

It seems logical to me, but I guess they could mention it when adding the discount. The Oyster system has no way of knowing whether you'll renew or not, so has to assume you won't.

Yes I've been caught out with that a few times. Slightly annoying but not too much hassle to replace the discount. I've set a reminder in my calendar to get it done a few days before expiry.

I tried once to update my Oyster card with a new Railcard having slightly over 3 years validity. (It had been issued as a renewal, so was valid to 3 years from expiry of previous card.)

The Oyster system would not accept the new expiry date.

Sadly that is a flaw in the system. Either get them to add two and a bit years so it's the same date but a year earlier, or if you can wait until the extra days have run out and get the full 3 years.
