Originally expected to be completed in March 2019, the postponement of the re-signalling work to allow for additional testing has allowed us to look at the works planned over the next five years and see if we can deliver them at the same time. The re-signalling work for NYL has been combined with a set of planned renewals in Control Period 6 (CP6) to deliver a package of work over 23 days in February 2020 which will transform the Wherry lines in one significant phase of work.
23 Days in February 2020
During the phased 23 days of works, we will complete the resignalling works; the new signals will be switched on and level crossings at Brundall, Lingwood, Strumpshaw, Cantley, Oulton Broad North and Victoria Road will be upgraded so they are working with the new signalling system which will improve safety for level crossing users.
The 23 days of access to the tracks gives us the opportunity to bring forward a big chunk of our renewals works planed over the next 5 years. This includes a significant piece of work to undertake a full bridge replacement at Postwick. The bridge at Postwick has come to the end of its life, and a new bridge structure will be installed that is designed to last 120 years.
We are also going to undertake track renewals at Lowestoft, Acle and Hassingham while the lines are closed.

Greater Anglia’s website. The completion of the re-signalling work will see train services resume on the branch line between Reedham and Lowestoft (serving Berney Arms station), which has been closed since October 2018.
Preserving our Heritage
As the Victoria signalling system is an important part of our railway heritage, we have established a number of contacts across various community projects that have expressed an interest in taking the redundant equipment. These include railway heritage projects, exhibitions and learning centres. Donations of redundant signalling equipment have already been made and we are continuing to identify opportunities for this equipment to find continued use and purpose.
