142005/142016/142021/142022/142025/142046/142066 were the ones earmarked for withdrawal this week. Now to discover how many actually went in reality and if any others went also/took their place.

Only 142005 has been withdrawn. The others on the list are going into warm storage to cover as backup if need be.

Well 142013 is in the NE today on Salt/Dar/Bishop services. Very rare to see a NH set up here so I would say that one at least has transferred. But as Heaton units do head off to the West regularly, it probably won't be long before it's back in the Manchester area.

What is warm storage. Aren't they parked outside.
K
In the sun. :)

Warm storage implies that they're kept in a state so that they're still ready to use, as opposed to cold storage. In the short term, there's not much difference between the two, but in the longer term it would involve turning the engines over every now and again, and the like.

What other use could there be?
Homeless shelter, bike rack, polling stations for the election in November:rolleyes:, fire service training, toilet blocks for festivals, shelters for station platform, line side holiday accommodation, roadside cafe, November 5th isn’t far away, restart Royal Mail rail services, submerge for scuba diving training... I’ll add some more later if you like :E

Turns out they were genius designed multifunctional vehicles!

When did 2x142 and 2x143 get scrapped btw?

142008 was the rear unit in the Winsford crash, it was rear ended by 87027.
142059 hit the buffer stops at Lime Street many years ago.
143613 caught fire near Nailsea & Backwell in 2004.
143615 caught fire at Ystrad Mynach around the same time.

I'm going off what was mentioned earlier in the thread about five units that have already been withdrawn. Other than 142005, what other 142's have offically been withdrawn?

Can we add home depot/storage location to that list please?
I'd need to know which units are based at which depot as I'll list them as (units 001/003..... based at Newton Heath. Units 002..... based at...)

So the first supposedly life-expired Pacer has been withdrawn to great fanfare, yet Northern services are still being short-formed, or, to a lesser extent, cancelled altogether. If doing away with the Pacers is no more difficult than short-forming services, they could be retired immediately.

This press release on the withdrawal of 142005 states that it first entered service in 20th February 1987.
https://scontent.fmla1-2.fna.fbcdn....=25116fd7fd207b5f0c33ec7c1d1f50db&oe=5DEAF3F3

I don't think that this is correct. I am sure that 142001 - 142014 entered service on the Oldham loop in 1985. The semi fast Liverpool LS to Preston/Blackpool Pacer service started in 1986 and I have seen a picture of later built 142051 at Liverpool LS around 28th august 1986 on the launch day.

Can anyone confirm the true date when 142005 first entered service?

Sadly I can't, but with such a low number you'd have thought it was one of the first.

The picture below can't be dated to a day, but clearly shows an early Pacer coming off the Hope Valley line from New Mills at Dore in late spring/early summer 1985. Extreme magnification suggests in might be 142020. My son and I were viewing the newly cleared site after platforms 2, 3 and 4 had been demolished, platform 1 shortened, and the line singled through the station. I think the contractors' Portaloo is still there at the end of the platform. The people gathered on the platform may have been train spotters, viewers of the new platform arrangement, or waiting for this train to return outbound from Sheffield.

Would anyone know whether all Northern or GWR Pacers will be gone after 2020? I know the law states they can't be in service, but I can't seem to believe that they will be replaced!
I'm wondering whether I'll need to book trips to see them before 2020 or whether I'll know I can see them after.

I can imagine GWR can replace their Pacers rather easily by the end of this year - they only have 8 of them and all their new stock has been delivered.

Northern Pacers will almost certainly remain after the end of this year, but whether they're all gone by the end of 2020 is anyone's guess.

Looks like 142046 moved to Heaton last night on 5A60 to join 016/21/2/5 and 66 at the depot. Unit 005 is still at Newton Heath.

142005 was definitely in service in 1985. Even the 144 driving cars were built in 1986. The only pacers built and into service in 1987 were the later build 142’s and 144 centre cars.

That photo looks like the unit is in the later RR GMPTE livery rather than the original orange which makes it more like 1991 onwards. Definitely won’t be 142020 as that was an original Laira unit delivered in brown/cream and later into Tyne and Wear yellow before eventually going into Arriva then Northern colours.

I'll definitely head down to Exeter then.
Hopefully GWR have some good advances, don't want to travel for 3 hours on a 159 again!

I'm pretty sure that 1987 date is incorrect too. There are plenty of pictures online of early numbered 142s earlier than 1987 and I'm pretty sure there were no 'stragglers' when the initial fleet was introduced.

They were built between 1985 and 1987 according to Wiki

Oh yes that's not in question, I remember them running in 1985. Unless 142005 was significantly delayed entering service then Northern are wrong, which isn't surprising.

You know that TFW have 30 x 142/143s also and say that they will be gone by end of year. GWR say likewise.
