and it has broken down again - perhaps the fitting of the bins ( apologies for the fat finger syndrome) was simply too exciting for the new chugs

<cough>

There's a few Pacers starting to go spare up here....

<splutter>

they would be ideal for our line. I have always said that.

They must surely settle down soon. Is it the same fault over and over (e.g. overheating) or different ones?

no idea. It seems to be overheating and gen sets. I thought they had overcome the issues but sadly not

MMMMM, roasty, toasty buns on a roasty, toasty train. Lovely. Can smell the baked goods from here!

Considering this is Vivarail's first rodeo, they've made a nice train with some problems that just need fixing. And unlike the Coradias that also have overheating problems, at least they can swap out the engines if it's needed.

Coradias can take an engine out very quickly and simply. It comes on a rack that slides out and back in.

fat finger syndrome
Isn't that caused by eating too many buns?
If Vivarail are now including rodeos in their ever-expanding portfolio, it is a pity that they were not able to lay their hands of a couple of Class 142 Pacers, soon to be available, as certain of the nicknames given to that class would indeed fit well in a rodeo show....:p

Vivarail have a list of current vacancies showing on their website. One of which is an Assistant Maintenance Technician based at Bletchley. Looks like the Maintenance Technician is a bit overworked, but I think we already guessed that. :D

Thanks for the info jimm. That should be the first of the five Transport for Wales three car units on test. Look forward to viewing any photos Peter Tandy can take of the test runs.

Roger Ford's e-preview suggests cooling has been an issue, with pesky pollen a familiar bugbear...

http://live.ezezine.com/ezine/archives/759/759-2019.08.19.03.58.archive.txt

Not that Hitachi and MTU have been the only manufacturers with overheating problems. The diesel engine generator modules in the Viva Rail Class 230 Diesel Multiple Units (making their debut in TIN-watch this month) have also suffered.

What has surprised Viva Rail since the units starting running between Bedford and Bletchley has been the amount of pollen in the summer air which, guess what, has been blocking the radiators. An improved cooling system has been fitted which allows the pollen and other gunge to be blown out of the radiator matrix more frequently.

Roger Ford - the uber spotter - always has a comment to make. I wonder how often he has used the line and these trains? If he had he might know that the issues are more varied than "cooling". There have been door issues, electrics issues, generator issues, engine issues and cooling issues. Along side those have been driver or guard shortages and infrastructure failings.

I also wonder if he has any comment to make about the heat inside the train? But then we are only passengers............

Is that of any great importance? That was only a summary rather than an in-depth report into their performance. If you think he's being unduly positive about the units, I don't think he would have pointed out that they are at the bottom of the MTIN table. I don't know what they're being compared against until next issue is released but I assume it's all other new stock, as before.

I will form my own opinions rather than relying on the word of some bloke people here seem to deify thanks. My views are based on daily use. What are his ( and by extension yours) based on? What i find really annoying is the the view of Mr Ford appears to be taken as gospel by posters here.

BTW - i have no interest in miles per failure, how my train performs against other new trains or any other spurious measure. I want to get to work on time and home for my tea. I would like to do that in a train that doesn't resemble a mobile microwave on a hot day.

I must admit I think you have more patience than me! For your shortish journey on the Vale I'd long since have cracked out the pushbike. Indeed, I think you're closer to BLY itself than I am.

Mainly because I am lazy. However I am walking more than ever before. I don't want to ride a bike to work. I want the train that I have paid for to take me there

I don't have a view, nor profess to have one, on stock I have not personally used. I'm simply commenting on Roger Ford's summary that was posted. It's clear you don't like the guy, but I don't think that sort of response was necessary.

DR As a fare paying customer you every right to be annoyed at the poor service. The Marston Vale line does appear to be a test track for the 230`s. A number of the problems you mention can be sorted, some, like the heat on hot days won`t without withdrawal and modification. I hope you will be able to visit the Wrexham - Bidston line when the Tfw 230`s are running to give us a critical analysis of how the units compare.
