that means that 2 7-car Pacers could be formed! or a single 12-car Pacer, but that would be 180m long rather than 105

OK, let's string together a 12-car Pacer and refurb it for railtours, complete with a real ale bar, a kitchen car and a Pullman-style fine dining area. :)

The competition is now open to submit your plans for the retiring Pacer trains, so place your bids, folks.
http://www.railtechnologymagazine.c...to-convert-retiring-pacer-trains-in-the-north

I note from the article that the rail minster's initial discussions have been with the pupils of a primary school in Bolton: If the DfT frequently receive input and guidance from primary school children it might go a long way towards explaining many of their policy decisions.
1) my plan: one could go in my garden. I'm sure the neighbours wouldn't mind having their houses and gardens bought out by me to facilitate it. :)
2) has Brexit been controlled by primary school kids as well? Oh wait, it's Theresa May controlling it, isn't it, so I'd day nursery levels of control happening there in Westminster.

Oh no no! :) A Pacer is the train the dinosaurs used, before the Stone Age.
Here is a Stone Age train:

I think finding an interesting way to preserve a few isn't a bad idea. Despite the fact they are disliked, they are part of our history and can stand as a reminder to future generations to not make the same mistakes we did.

Yes, it is possible to mount a bus to a freight car and call it a train. No, it should never be repeated.

Definitely weren't a mistake, they were a solution for its time. Unfortunately they lasted far longer than intended, the real mistake was not chronic underinvestment in rolling stock for many years.

Mr D. B. Rown has expressed his interest in procuring Pacers for his heritage railway operation, North England Railways (absolutely nothing to do with Northern Rail)!

I don't think there's actually a limit - all cars are independent in terms of traction, air supply etc.
There is a limit on the number of pacer cabs that can be electrically connected, so I think the limit is about the point where the controls don't work any more.

Sports clubs...

Would make decent viewing balcony at the side of a cricket boundary. Some decking around floor level etc to hide the bogies.

Be like a greenhouse for the few Saturday's in summer we have hot weather, for the other 15 weekends it'd be welcome shelter from the wind and rain.

When did these things ever keep the rain out?

It might help. To quote the Evil Overlord List: "12. One of my advisors will be an average five-year-old child. Any flaws in my plan that he is able to spot will be corrected before implementation."

Are they not owned by a ROSCO? If so, why would the ROSCO allow these to be offered like this over other units they will get scrap value for.

Is this the ROSCO pretending to do something fun but really just getting out of a liability because they are that rubbish that even the breakers yard would charge to take them?

Even better, is there something nasty hiding in there that means they would actually be quite expensive to scrap - the nature of which will only be revealed after some poor community group assumes liability? I can't imagine what it could be bearing in mind they are a bus bolted to a goods wagon.

More to the point, will these bloody things never die? Is their withdrawel merely a flesh wound? Will they feature in every chapter of out post-apocolyptic, dystopian future? Are they robots in disguise? Do they make an ideal Tory Association being not only an excellent symbol of Tory underinvestment in the north but also more than adequate in size for the 3 80 year olds that for some reason get to chose our next Prime Minister?

ROSCO would have to store them somewhere like the Potter Group in Ely for example for a period of time before they are finally took for scrap, the rent for such storage could be more than the scrap value

They could also need DRS to drag them to storage which is more money as some will be dead as Northern will start to strip parts

Train carriages (especially those built to British loading gauge, especially those that are only 15.5m long) are far too small to be used as a "hall" of any kind.

Perhaps a local conservative association might buy one for a local conservative club. With the party's dwindling support, a pacer might be about the right size in the future.

The judging panel for the Pacer competition has now been appointed, consisting of Pete Waterman, Porterbrook Chief Executive Mary Grant and Tim Dunn.

Porterbrook are making three class 144 vehicles available, rather than this applying to the Pacer fleet more widely:

Judging panel appointed for Pacer competition
02/09/2019 in Network

Pete Waterman, Porterbrook Chief Executive Mary Grant and media personality Tim Dunn are among those appointed to the judging panel for the Government’s ‘Transform a Pacer’ competition.

Three Class 144 vehicles are to be donated by Porterbrook when Northern returns them next year, with each vehicle to be modified and used for a community cause. Applications will be made, and the panel will select the best ideas.

Also on the panel are Association of Community Rail Partnerships Chief Executive Jools Townsend and MP Trudy Harrison (Conservative, Copeland).

“Pacers have connected communities across the North for more than 30 years, but they have outstayed their welcome,” said Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris

Dunn, a railway enthusiast, broadcaster and historian, said: “Taking an old train and turning it into something else is tricky - it requires not just creativity, but a serious plan for ongoing maintenance. too."

Three vehicles, or three units?

at the end of the high and low roads
Wonder if any long suffering punter has submitted an entry along the lines of
"Fit road wheels and a steering wheel and use for community transport" !!

Could even be pressed into service as a RRB (rail replacement bus)

I'll get my coat...
