How the hell can this be right??

KGX to Edinburgh £43.55

Exactly the SAME train KGX to York £73.90!!

8 am 6th May.

In which alternate reality does that make the slightest bit of sense?
To encourage longer distance travel, and discourage people from using these trains for shorter distances. Answered 3 posts in:
Exactly, Anglo Scottish trains are priced to prioritize the longer journeys while the semi fasts off much better value.

It's demand based pricing. No different to a flight from Dublin to New York, via London, being cheaper than just the flight from London to New York (just an example, but it definitely works this way on the airlines).

Though on the other hand I have found several instances of Peterborough to York 1st class advances in the mornings where the fare on the Edinburgh service is cheaper than using the York stopper about 20 minutes earlier. So not much incentive to use the stopper to leave space on the Edinburgh train for longer distance passengers.
The 1st advance from Stevenage to York on the 07:28 stopper is much higher than it was a few months ago. It used to be easy to get a reasonable price even 2-3 weeks ahead.

I'm pretty sure there will be some more changes with the new trains

The same applies to both the 0700 and 0900 departures as well, but splitting at Peterborough brings the cost down to a more reasonable £35.20 for these services. This can't be done with the 0800 though, as it doesn't call at Peterborough.

They may have blocked the cheapest tiers to York to free up capacity for Edinburgh passengers. KGX to York is £13.10 on the following 0806 train; £29 for the 0830. The 0730 is similarly expensive but Trainsplit will do it for £31.56 (saving £52.94).

This is market based pricing of train specific fares, which is what train companies want to do even more if they get their way with the fares reforms.

Booked yesterday for travel today . £3.90 with railcard advance Glasgow to Berwick. Nothing stopping someone use this to beat peak time fare to Edinburgh ,as i travelled on the 0745 fro Queen St .

Other than not being allowed to break a journey on an advance ticket?

It's a tough one. It is a constant source of frustration the cheapest tier of tickets not being available from Newcastle due to the tier always being taken up from York. So if they're trying to stop that I can't entirely hate them.

But it's not a great road to go down.

Am I right in assuming that all advances are back to twelve weeks ahead now rather than the twenty four that VTEC were offering at one point? Which means I'm not going to be looking for my Great north Run trains until June rather than March/April.

Only because of Network Rail’s inability to organise anything further out. Of course this could change at any time.

The ticket for my train finally became available, and it turned out that it was much cheaper than I'd seen before. I only paid £54.80.

That is good then, all is well ends well. Getting a good price on advance tickets is a frustrating and difficult task these days although can be very rewarding when done right.

I travelled on the train on Wednesday. First class (at least my carriage) was fairly empty, and when I alighted at York and walked along the platform past the other carriages they all looked relatively lightly loaded too, just as was suggested on the LNER website. So the inflated prices for that train compared with last year make no sense at all.
