Qualifications required for what role exactly?

Agencies? I'm not too sure what you are looking for. Generally qualifications on the rail industry are dependant on the job you are applying for.

Contacted a agency who act as a sponsor.Charge 1500 for the courses needed and medical.then it's a case of them phoning you up when company needs more workers. Also might help if positions become available with rail company.it would just be labouring side to start.

I’m assuming you are on about Track Maintenance side of the railway, my personal opinion is that you’d be better off working direct rather than through an agency, Network Rails start apprenticeships twice a year (or something like that), which is much more secure and you don’t have to pay for your own qualifications, plus there’s the added benefits of holidays and sick pay etc.

I don't believe paying £1500 for a course that doesn't guarantee work is the best option for you.

If you apply directly, or look on the Network Rail website for job roles near yourself. For instance the - Operative [Works Delivery Track] https://iebsprodnwrl.omcs.networkra...DISPLAY&p_svid=2157771&p_spid=6940941&refsh=0

No qualifications needed, although an NVQ Level 1 would be desirable but not essential.

I did a CSCS course earlier in the year that lasted for two weeks. I was between a couple of agency jobs at the time and technically unemployed so I got the course for free as I was referred by the Job Centre.

Most of the lads on the CSCS course were unemployed and looking at going into manual labouring jobs such as building sites or road maintenance. At the time I did the CSCS course purely to fill two weeks of unemployment and add something to my CV. As it is health and safety I'm glad I did it now as all railway jobs carry some level of H&S (even office based roles).

The course trainer mentioned that an eight week railway rolling track course was scheduled for later in the year but it meant remaining unemployed if I committed to it. Unfortunately, I decided not to sign up for it as I wasn't 100% sure I really wanted to do an outdoor railway maintenance role long term.

From what I have since learned - there is no guarantee of a job at the end of the eight week course although contractors such as Balford Beatty are sometimes brought in towards the end to sign people up for work.

Yes railway recruitment is usually slow. You will get a response either way just have to hold out for the reply.
