If you look at the Northern website and look at the timetables, you can see which stations are request stops. I think that, some stations are request stops only for some trains.

I think Flimby is the only request stop I've used on the national network, plus a couple on the Isle of Man. I always thought that request stops in a built-up area are a bit odd - Deganwy and Burnley Barracks, for example.

I was told that, to stop a train at a request stop after dark, shine a torch on the track. Don't shine it in the driver's face and don't wave it up and down. Is there an "official" instruction anywhere?

Don't shine a torch at all. It's confusing, I'd think you had dropped something on the track and stop well short incase you decided to go after it.

The simple instruction is to indicate to the driver - standing on the platform with a raised mitt is more than sufficient, but I will stop at any request stop when someone is on the platform indicating or not.

Agreed, both those stations I've never been on a train which hasn't stopped there. Deganwy is sometimes stopped at as the guard doesn't have time from Llandudno Junction to check for anybody requesting it.

I can see Burnley Barracks losing its request stop status at some point, that area around the station seems to be growing with housing

What's the busiest station you can leave and get a direct train to a request stop?
Do any London termini have request stop services? B New Street perhaps?

Since some of the Heart of Wales Line services run right through to and from Crewe, and that line has loads of request stops, then that's a possible for the busiest?

And in terms of closeness to London [an earlier question], you can certainly travel the whole HoW line on a day-trip from London, though probably only in one direction, reaching it one way round and returning to London from the other end.

Also, Deganwy has a level crossing, so trains may be checked approaching the station.

I enjoyed my visit to Duncraig. A good walk from Plockton and a pretty station.
Also Entwhistle has a excellent pub bnext door.

Not near London but all intermediate stops on the Bidston-Wrexham line are request stops save for Shotton and Wrexham General.

Holyhead to Birmingham New street or Llandudno to Manchester Picadilly all serve request stops and must be quite close contenders.

This thread seems to be looking at various things now - most major station leading to a request stop, longest journey including a request stop, and so on! As for the latter, then (ignoring the sleeper) Holyhead-Birmingham must beat Llandudno-Manchester. Maybe Brum-Pwllheli is even longer though?

There are usually people boarding and/or alighting most trains at Deganwy.
I guess it is a request stop so that if there happens to be no one requiring it any late running trains can catch up a couple of minutes or so, non stop trains do rattle through the level crossing at a decent enough speed though.

I am certain that the usage figures for Deganwy are understated as there is no ticket machine and it is rare that you get your tickets checked when travelling to Llandudno. The day return train fare is around half the price of Arriva bus fare!

The other issue with Deganwy is that most advance tickets are not available from Deganwy especially on Virgin Trains, consequently most people buy tickets to/from Llandudno Junction.

The good news is that from December 2019, Deganwy will gain an all year round, roughly hourly service until 2130 plus 5 trains every Sunday in both directions to/from Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Sales pitch to forum members:
Give Deganwy Station a try, two lovely tea shops over the road and a beautiful level walk alongside the estuary to either Conwy in one direction or Llandudno in the other both taking around 45 minutes or so!

I use Kilgetty quite frequently, the mother-in-law lives very near there, similarly Saundersfoot. I'm surprised that both Kilgetty and Narberth are request stops to be honest as both are well over 10k passengers a year.

Many years ago, the Paddington train to Pembroke Dock used to have request stops at Penally and probably others. At that time it was a full blown HST. Are there are any main line trains which call at request stops now, or are they all local trains?

The biggest beast I ever requested to stop was on the Flam railway in Norway, incredible the power I had in one hand.

I believe this still runs on summer Saturdays, spotted an 800 at Manorbier last weekend.

Think all intermediate Conwy Valley stations are request stops except Tal y cafn, Llanrwst and Betws y Coed. Not sure about North Llanrwst though

My son was keen to "make his intent clear" and the line down to Stratford Upon Avon seemed to be the only option if we wanted a regular train service. From memory the Suffolk ones had a very limited service.

You're completely wrong I'm afraid.

Only Pont Penarlag / Hawarden Bridge is a request stop, and passengers for this station should ask the conductor on the train to arrange for the train to stop, to allow them to alight.

Can Foxfield thank the wonderful Prince of Wales home brew pub opposite for its promotion from request stop to scheduled station?

Living in the South East, request stops don't exist. Just for the pleasure of using one I got on and off at Umberleigh (Devon) back in the spring. Never having used a request stop, it felt like I was getting on a bus holding my hand out.
If it was a class 143, you practically were.
