Hello all! Just after some friendly advice of anybody could help me. I am due to attend my face to face interview next week for trainee conductor based at shrewsbury, and would like to take some basic route and traction knowledge of Shrewsbury depot in with me. I have small amount of info from travelling on trains, but any accurate info of rosters, links, allocations and routes would be very much appreciated by you lovely people in the know! Thanks again!

gazthomas thank you very much for the info, figured it may be beneficial to get a better idea as to where I would be going and how I'd be getting there, to take that extra snippet of knowledge into the interview may help somewhat according to others more experienced than myself, so thank you again!

What about Birmingham International ? Swansea I doubt but if going down Hear of Wales, perhaps Llanwrtyd Wells, also. unless things have altered, Wrexham to Bidston.
Perhaps, there is somebody who will be able to post more accurate listings

Of course yes I forgot Brum, and the Cambrian line as well presumably towards Pwllheli and Aberystwyth? The trouble is I'm not sure how far the conductors sign from shrewsbury. They do run the Swansea/Llanelli HOW service but don't know if it's all the way? Was thinking Llanwrtyd or Llandovery but wasn't sure if there was a change. That's my problem in a nutshell I have some basic knowledge of where they go but I'd like some exact info really just to show I've done my research thanks for your post all help appreciated!

Why reply when you're clearly just guessing and haven't got a clue what you're talking about? With the exception of "South Wales" Shrewsbury guards never work to any of the places you've listed.

First of all, good luck!

At the moment, Shrewsbury is one big happy link of 36 conductors, so all conductors do everything (with the proviso that new conductors normally don't sign loco and stock for the first few months). The depot is currently undergoing a large expansion however, so how exactly the work is divided may change. At the moment they're the only depot that can work loco and stock South of Chester, but Cardiff are likely to take on some of that work soon when the Cardiff - Holyhead services to up to 3 trains per day.

At the moment, earliest start is around 0430 (first Llandrindod) and latest finish just after 0100 (last arrival from Wolves) although you may be required to work earlier/later then that as cross covering of Chester, Crewe and Machynlleth work (with the resulting taxis) is pretty common.

Fantastic bunch of folk working there, you'll have a great time if you're successful.

Craigybagel thank you very much for your advice and info, everyone I've spoken to so far (conductors on the way to assessments etc) have been very helpful and friendly so I've no doubt you're talking sense there. Like I said I only really wanted some concrete info so I can walk in having done some research into local workings and the depot set up etc, so you've really helped me out there! Thanks again! Do you work out of Shrewsbury yourself mate?

No problem at all, happy to help. Until recently I was a conductor at a nearby depot so very familiar with Shrewsbury conductors.

Thanks again for everybody who helped with advice, I've provisionally been offered a position with TFW as a trainee conductor starting the training course on October 14th, subject to the usual checks! Conductor managers at interview, and the recruitment staff were all really nice and very helpful and im looking forward to starting the hard graft to become a fully qualified railwayman :p thanks again!
