Hello all,

Having seen the following video:
https://twitter.com/i/status/1161214970530553857
From the SVR's Official Twitter account, I was wondering - what on earth is this?

I know they say "Coming Soon", but I am an impatient so-and-so and would really like to know what it is.
The SVR was used for filming in mid-July:
https://www.shropshirestar.com/ente...lming-to-close-part-of-severn-valley-railway/
And I wonder if these two things could be linked?

Thanks in advance,

-Peter

I know this could go in the "Speculative Ideas" sub-forum here, but this is a thing which will happen so I decided to put it here. Mods/admins, please feel free to move this if you feel it is necessary.

Looks like the train of lights as seen at Paignton last year.

Thanks for pointing me towards that - they really do look similar and maybe a comment on the SVR Twitter about a potential Christmas Train is true....!

The Dartmouth line Train of Lights was very successful last year, I guess that is why other are trying it as well. Santa Specials have a specific market aimed at families and children, whereas the Train of Lights attracted far more adults as well as families. A fine piece of marketing which brings in a welcome cash flow at the quieter months of the year.

It's good that heritage lines are trying to find other ways of bringing in money apart from just railway enthusiast events; as much as I hate to say it, an enthusiast event is probably worse for a railway as it costs a lot to put on and then only one group of people goes as opposed to a "Train of Lights" or "Santa Special" event - these bring in both parents and children, and those who are probably not interested in trains (more so the Lights one here than Santa Specials, those going to Santa events are more railway enthusiasts, or the kids like trains).

Given how cheap, attractive, safe and low-powered small coloured LED lights are these days this seems like an excellent revenue raiser, I'll probably attend my local one (GCR) if it's not *too* 'kiddie oriented'.

Good point. The SVR are still keeping it very quiet as to what this is about. But I doubt any of these events will be very "kiddie orientated" - they have to appeal to both adults and children, and I assume that it will be like a normal lights display at Christmas, but on rails?

I've just noticed that the SVR have uploaded a video called "Steam In Lights" to YouTube. It is a private video at the moment, but I still got the notification.
I have just also done a YouTube search for the video and I have found this:
upload_2019-8-20_11-30-11.png
Which, upon clicking, led me to this:
upload_2019-8-20_11-30-37.png
Which isn't helpful at all.

Any answers?

-Peter

EDIT: Just noticed that the 1st picture says "Premiering at 10:00, 30.8.2019" so that will be the announcement date I guess.

It turns out that the event is "Steam in Lights". Here is a video from the SVR YouTube channel which covers it:

It is only basic, but better than nothing at the moment! :)

Very glad the preserved railways have picked up on a new type of event to get people on board!

Definitely - any way in which a heritage line can bring in some extra people and money is good in my books, as long as it keeps to the "this is a railway, not just a tourist destination" theme.
