As some on the forum may be aware, I am travelling today on a Strathclyde Daytripper ticket. I'm on my own ticket and bought the 1 adult version (obviously). At one point, the guard on the train said that I was supposed to have children travelling with me. He didn't issue any fines or force me off the train, he just made that statement.

I know he is wrong, because it is valid for 1 adult and up to 2 children (0 being within the phrase "up to"). But, would I have to abduct some children to make the guard happy?

No, there is no requirement for children to travel for this ticket.

No; the guard made it up.

I'm on a Daytripper now and about 7 TTIs and one guard have all been happy to accept the ticket without quibble.
