Not loaded MoD Vehicles for a few years now, so may not be fully up to date, but, for anybody interested the consists appears to be, 7 x RWMIK (Land Rovers), 17 x Foxhounds and 4 x Husky.

(my bold): I know what the WMIK stands for (Weapon Mount Installation Kit), whats the R for?

This thread has brought back some great memories of what is probably the most "outrageous" railtour I've travelled on. It was in July 2017 and featured 3 loco's, 2 coaches, 20 wagons and 3 military vehicles, including a rocket launcher - and crossed an international border!

Here's a wonderful record of the tour (footage from the tour itself starts at about 5m30s):

If you've read the P&J report by now you will see that they came from Fort George en route to exercises on Salisbury Plain, and that the loading, transport and unloading of the vehicles was part of the exercise.

Yes - very sensible activity

AIUI provision of rolling stock, etc. for BAOR trains was by DB.

Are you referring to the Alpine tunnels? My thought is that from a loading gauge consideration, they wouldn't have presented a particular problem - if the train could have got to them, it could have got through.

But I don't know what the political issues might have been transiting Switzerland or Austria (neither in NATO) - perhaps they would have to have been routed round through France.
When serving in BAOR we went to Italy on a NATO exchange visit. At the time we were equipped with Saladin Armoured Cars and Ferret Scout cars. They were loaded as normal but to go through Austria, neutral at that time, they had to be completely covered. Large grey sheets were used, supplied by who I know not. For movements inside Germany we had to provide a guard on one Corporal and 3 men but on this occasion this didn't happen. The guard would have ridden in a brake ban. In addition on this one occasion the hatches were welded shut. A right performance but I got to ride some good routes as we all went by train both ways.

Are they using a low loader lorry as a loading ramp in the Elgin photos? Ingenious.
