Just watching the rolling news into the events of last night, when a Police Office was killed in a road collision. I noticed from the aerial coverage, the accident appears to have taken place on the road that leads to the former rail crossing at Ufton Nervet. The replacement road bridge can clearly be seen in the background. A sad link, to a piece of rail history. RIP Stan Martin.

When I read '10 males arrested' my first thought was gypsies...

If you think the gypsies are the murderers then say so. Dont pussy foot around.

I didn't think that. My thought was limited to those arrested. I'm not convicting them of anything.

And I chose to use the term gypsy as it covers a wide variety of itinerant peoples. Not as a pejorative. Just as it isn't when used in the census.

Agreed. Everyone hates an I know but you don't poster.

I didn’t have any information other than what was reported in the initial news. Ten males arrested and the youngest was 13.

Everyone knows what that means.

I’m surprised none of you were thinking the same.

Enough bickering. If you have a concern with a post please report it. As long as we now get back onto the topic at hand I think we can move on with no further action required.

As with the murder in Newcastle's shopping centre, it's amazing how coy the media are being.

It is a reminder, if we need it, that we are policed by consent and when people feel they have no stake in their community and feel the law doesn't apply to them then this is an inevitable consequence.

Rest in peace.

Poor lad - off for his honeymoon next week. I feel for his widow - and his colleagues will be in shock, too - however hardened they are.

A terrible thing to happen. My thoughts are with all involved particularly the victim’s family, friends and colleagues, and all involved in the aftermath.

Rather chilling that it’s just a few hundred yards from the site of the rail accident. Certainly a rather unfortunate coincidence that two particularly nasty events involving loss of life have occurred here, neither of which were accidents.

Not the only link. After the Ufton Nervet disaster, 'residents' from the local gypsy encampment were seen attempting to plunder personal belongings from the derailed carriages.

What evidence is there of this attempted plundering? It is the kind of lazy made up allegation beloved of certain red-top newspapers.

As an ex Police Officer I am of course horrified by this death on duty. I feel that I must point out that an arrest is a long way from a charge, which itself is another big step from a conviction. Who if any of the ten arrested is charged with causing the death with one or more of several possible offences we will have to wait and see?

A very wise post, and people should always be wary of jumping to conclusions. Having said that, it's very unfortunate to say that with the group in question instincts have a nasty habit of being right.

You're quite right to point this out. It would be very unusual, though not unprecedented, for as many as ten people to be charged with the murder of an individual, but twenty youths were charged in connection with the murder of a schoolboy on Victoria Underground Station on the basis of it being a premeditated 'joint enterprise', and eight were convicted. It was a somewhat controversial move to charge so many with the murder, but the fact that eight were convicted might be said to justify it.

If there is evidence to charge all 10 and if that evidence is enough to convince a a Jury all well and good. I wanted to point out that arrest is only the first step of a long process and all too often it is thought to be the end of the journey. It isn't.

A man has been charged with murdering 28-year-old PC Andrew Harper, who was killed while investigating a burglary.

The Thames Valley Police officer died on Thursday in Sulhamstead, Berkshire, after being dragged along the road by a vehicle.

PC Foster's wife, Lissie, paid tribute to the "kindest, loveliest, most selfless person you will ever meet".

Jed Foster, 20, of Reading, has been charged with his murder and the theft of a quad bike.

Mr Foster will appear at Reading Magistrates' Court on Tuesday morning.

Nine other people who were arrested at the same time as Mr Foster have been released on bail until 13 September. ....
