First trip on a 195 today. Hmmm, quite a few bits that could have been done better.
- The thud out of 1st. Could that really not have been avoided?
- Space age noise is very odd.
- Something is making these units feel a lot smaller than the TPE 185's inside. I suspect it is a combination of factors including the black seat frames. A lesson in poor interior design all round.
- The seats are rubbish, but so are the seats on my Thameslink. The flat cloth is already looking grubby. I suspect the manufacturer will come to regret the day they ever suggested this grade of cloth is right for railways seats, especially bearing in mind they also manufacture moquette. I would have thought the TOCs will be in a queue to complain that the advertised ease of cleaning/durability etc is not playing out.
- The heating duct intrudes almost as badly as on the 700's. It also seems to come up higher overall and is bare metal. I am in shorts today and my leg is sort od forced against it. Is that going to be a problem when that metal gets hot in winter I wonder?
- The PIS is not working.
- Having looked at the seat alignment in person, it really is lazy.

They seem to move well at speed. They are not quiet units at all, especially with all the special effects.

All in all, a lack of attention to detail and a very odd feeling of a smaller carriage than I think they in reality are.

A shame really - the north has been waiting 15 years for these units. I would rather be on a 323, 170, 158, 185 and maybe even a 156. Maybe maybe even a 319. They are however better in my view than a Pacer ;)

Northern have abandoned that seating cloth on their refurbishments due to the amount of dirt they accumulate.

I went for a ride on a 195 for the first time. Not a special trip.

They seem absolutely fine. Seats fine. At seat power a bonus.

Seemed quiet and smooth. No complaints at all.

I thought it was quite a decent train to ride on but I suppose it depends what you are comparing it with. I would prefer a 170 or a 175. The seats are bit hard but the right shape (for me anyway). Attaching the seats to the wall via a diagonal strut is a novel idea and means small items of luggage can go under your seat. Just having one toilet on all versions (195 and 331) could be, shall we say, inconvenient. Also the litter bins are hard to find and very small. I wonder if the lack of internal doors between carriages will cause draughts in winter.

The third LIV-MIA diagram was 195 operated today by 195001/007 which were noted on the 1740 MIA-LIV and 1917 LIV-MIA.

They've been on that diagram for most of this week, although 195120 worked part of it today, and the diagram missed altogether for three and a half hours.

That shouldn't happen, as the gangways are apparently sealed units. If they weren't sealed they'd cause the aircon to fail just as happens on the 158s if the emergency hoppers are opened prematurely.

I would agree with all of this.

Decent interior for fast, middle/long-distance, regional journeys.

(From allocations thread)
Tonight's 1N68 Manchester Airport to Blackpool is a 195/1.
Stuck behind 2 late running stoppers, at around 30mph where the unit annoyingly cycles through 1st and 2nd gears.
Guard even did a full revenue check after Salford, unusual for Northern trains at this late hour. Perhaps related to the dispatch being cab orientated.
Also to add, no door issues and PIS seemed accurate and fixed compared to last month. They really do accelerate fast, even compared to a 319.

I'm looking forward to perhaps riding on one of these trains some day!

For now, all the Northern services I've caught since their introduction are 150's, Pacers and a 319 if I'm lucky!!!
Are they going to keep moving forward and rolling out more of the trains now they should have ironed out the initial passenger service kinks?

195001 was by itself on the 1116 LIV-MIA today. As the EMT norwich trains were on strike the service was wedged with standing room only from LIV.

The seats on these units are so hard, got on one within about 10 minutes of getting out of the car and the seats were so firm and uncomfortable, also a friend with me that is used to making regular trips on Northern units also found them a little firm. Everyone's opinion of comfort will differ but I would find them too hard for a long trip and seemed similar to the Class 700 etc

Saw 195103 trundle through Wakefield Westgate at around 7:40am today. Looked to be on test, no internal lights on, heading south. Hopefully they will start running the Sheffield services soon - anyone know when they are going to enter services on this side of the Pennines?

It was on driver training. It's scheduled to shuttle between Doncaster and Wrenthorpe Reception throughout the day.

I've lost track as to which cross pennine routes 195s are hopefully to appear on.
Leeds Southport?, Leeds Chester?, York Blackpool?, Manchester Sheffield? perhaps.

Leeds-Chester. Currently estimated October. No plans for Leeds-Southport at this time, nor Hope Valley. No idea about York-Blackpool, can't remember what was said but that's off my radar.

Isn't Leeds-Southport being cut back to Leeds-Wigan at the next timetable change anyway? If so I can't see that getting 195s, York-Blackpool is far more likely a candidate to operate them at some point.

The original plan was
Leeds-Chester/Ellesmere Port
York/Leeds - Blackpool
Bradford - Manchester Airport
Liverpool - Manchester - Bradford - Leeds.

Are you sure it wasn't a 6-car set, i.e. 2x195/1? There haven't been any reports of 195/0s doing training runs east of the Pennines, and to create an 8-car set you'd need 2x195/1+1x195/0, or 4x195/0. A double 195/1 is still quite a big train.

They were a pair of 195/1s so 6 cars in total. Lead unit was 195113. I didn't see the number on the second unit.

It appears that they're doing route training (my guess!) along the Calder valley line today

Stock movement working as 5G95 from Blackpool North to Doncaster West Yard ready for more training.

Here's 195113 plus another 195/1 passing through Brighouse earlier with 5G95, in a heavy shower.

195113 was in Doncaster about 20 minutes ago (up at the North End of the station, just off platform 8), I was nearly going to say 331113 was there!

So used to seeing 331's about now that I thought it was another new one for DON-LDS, it was when I noticed it was only 3 cars that I started paying attention!

195 111 passed though Sowerby Bridge enroute Huddersfield to Blackpool at 14.55.
Seems to be getting busier with 195s east side this week.
