Never in doubt.

aye aye whatever ;) I think the 10 overs lost in the morning were crucial to delivering a draw.

For the first time in a long time the Aussie batsmen looked a little scared, physically, of an England bowler. Lots of backing away.

Archer and Butler might want thier time again after that bouncer. Turning your back and having a laugh isnt the way you go about it. Not after Phil Hughes.

Theres very few things ill get pissed off at in the cricket but thats one of them.

I didn't see that ( and i have watched the replays) but it isn't on if true. In the interviews i heard with Archer he seemed genuinely concerned for Smith and for what had happened to him. That was a hell of a ball mind. 96mph! Thank god for helmets. Also no way Smith should have been allowed back out on the field.

For those who like cricket administration. The first time a concussion sub has been used.

And he bravely stood up to and recovered from being cracked on the jaw by Archer at 92mph. Fair play.

Indeed he shouldn't have go back out. Where he was hit was the exact place Phil Hughes was hit.
Chances are he was slightly concussed(Not enough to fail the tests or anything like that) then and was more or less in robot mode when he came out.
We see that stuff all the time down here in aussie rules. Some players end up concussed and just try to keep playing and need the doctor/physio to just about drag them off.

I can only assume they use the same SCAT5 test they use in AFL. Apprantly it's not easy to fudge it. Some players fail it when normal let alone after a belt to the head.

Good grief is that the sort of riff raff they let into the MCC these days.

Apparently the concussion tests were easy to beat as the answers could be memorised. The current test measures against a pre season baseline and with the questions changed on a regular basis.

In any event Smith should have been prevented from coming back out. He wasn't right. We could all see that. He was brave to do so but that bravery could be destructive if he was hit again.

I know. Cheats like Smith have no place at Lords ;)

I might have given the poor chap a break after taking on one the head. That seemed punishment enough!

.

Of course, social media was quick to pick up on this and of course the usual suspects made the assumption that Buttler (who I believe was first to get to Smith as he was fielding at short leg) and Archer were laughing at Smith, but I have read that, quite correctly, in such a situation the bowler also needs to be supported. Protocols have been developed in this area and it would be totally inappropriate for the bowler - having just felled a batsman - to be left alone with his thoughts. Buttler, to my mind, did the right thing.

Glad to see County Championship now up and running again. It is day 2 of 4 in the Division Two match between Glamorgan and Lancashire and Glamorgan yesterday recovered from 145-8 to 257 all out, with the number 10 batsman scoring 51 not out and the number 11 batsman scoring 32.

Lancashire, top of the league, seem to have a number of players who can produce good batting performances and in reply, were 544-9 in reply, with Dane Vilas last man out for 266 (6 x 6 and 35 x 4).

None of the press photos I saw, nor the TV coverage, gave this impression, indeed I could see concern in the eyes of Buttler, Denly and Bairstow which no-one could feign. The bowler should always stay out of these situations, as happened with poor Phillip Hughes: they have, or should have, a lot of thinking to do in the immediate aftermath, regardless of how ot turns out. Anyone who could then boo Smith in these circumstances (again, there seem to be totally different accounts) needs to go home and take a good look in the mirror. Warner (the main culprit in sandpapergate by any unbiased account) is getting his own comeuppance on the field of play, and long may it continue.

Jofra Archer reminds Jonathan Agnew of Andy Roberts, the first of the West Indian quicks of the 1970s, who famously never exchanged any words with batsmen: neither did Curtly Ambrose. I remember seeing Roberts just after he'd been signed as a rookie by Hampshire: they were playing my team, Kent, and the taxi driver taking me to the ground from Southampton Station asked if I'd heard of him, because apparently there were rumours that certain Hants batsmen wouldn't face him in the nets! I hadn't heard of him, but by the end of that first day I wasn't likely to forget him: no Kent batsman had an answer to him, and those wickets he didn't get on the scorecard were gifted by him to the other bowlers. Justin Langer is going to regret his ill-founded remark about Archer's stamina!

England win the toss and will bowl
England win the toss and will camp out in the pavilion all day. It's chucking it down here in Lancashireland and the radar suggests it's all on it's way to Headingley. With two Tests after this one, we're into September and I think that's ridiculous. Sure we've had the World Cup taking just over half of the summer (it was too long IMO, just to please TV companies who can cover India a minimum of nine games...) so why does the Ashes have to follow? Surely that should have been put back a year so we could have a shorter series and not go into September?

Also note that the 20/20 finals are late September. Either global warming's gone mad, or I have.

I'm not a cricket fan at all but I do love listening on the radio when the Ashes are on. It's the only time I do pay attention to the game. I love playing the Aussies. It's a great rivalry.

I was enjoying the commentary today on 5 Live but now it's been postponed at 4:00pm. It's the middle of the day! It's not dark. It's daylight.

Why?

Bad light. They’re taking tea at 1610 now so might be back on fairly soon.

I was hoping our resident Aussie would have some sort of comment to pass on yesterdays performance! Where have they got to?:lol:

Look, just let me enjoy this moment before it all comes crashing down around my ears in a few hours when England are reduced to not very many for five or six wickets ;)

go and stand out in the middle and have a bloke chuck a small dark red ball at you at 90plus mph and then come back and tell me what you think about light. Personally I think with lights they shouldn't be going off but I understand why.

No he isn't. Walking wicket is a more appropriate description.

he is a fine player and might do well at, say, 5. He isnt an opener

It's like slow motion with Root. The ball was halfway down the pitch and you could see exactly what was coming. It's painful to watch.

The problem is because of how poor Roy is at the top Root comes in at three ( where he shouldn't be playing) with the ball very new and therefore has to play like an opener. He isnt an opener. He should be coming in at 4 with the ball scuffed up and the bowlers tired.
