So who has the best range , id say Morrisons and tesco .

Sainsburys range has not been changed in a while and the Sainsburys locals have a poor selection .

Asda is better than it was.

For those lucky enough to live in Northern England the only answer is Booths. Their Lake District stores are oases of calm among the tourist madness. They sell an amazing range of UK and international beers. One of my guilty secrets is a liking for Anchor Steam which although American is tasty. And then there is Einstok from Iceland, also available at Booths.

I find that most Asda stores in Scotland carry a good selection of bottled beers, and with minimum unit pricing forcing up the price of the run-of-the-mill beers (Tennants Lager etc) they are almost as cheap. I am very partial to Timothy Taylors Landlord and The Old Crafty Hen

I was going to say Booths. Without doubt the best supermarket in the world.

Its pale southern imitation Waitrose has a surprisingly poor range, Tesco or even Aldi are better in that regard.

I'll go for Waitrose. Whilst Sainsburys is my local (and the wider range has not changed recently), Waitrose always has an interesting range with something new and local.

Only get there once in a while though because I'm not posh enough.

I don't agree about Waitrose, lots of choice with plenty of obscure offerings, particularly if you're into Belgian beer

Booths might be good, but who's going to travel 200 miles to get a few bottles of beer? Waitrose is just 150 seconds walk from here. :)

Sainsbury's (large) is the best for me. It's the only one which seems to sell my preferred choice.

Tescos has gone right down recently - too trendy by half.

All 'local' or 'metro' shops are rubbish.

I agree. Some super beers like Proper Job and Waggledance given over to lines and lines of cans of extremely expensive samey craft beer with squiggly designed cans

Morrisons always has a good range from less well known breweries - most of the others just sell the usual mass produced stuff.

My local Lidl has stopped selling Marstons Pedigree, and Wholemeal bread-flour. Pedigree is available occasionally at my local Coop, and I've found basic wholemeal flour in a large Asda.

Indeed. Expensive craft beer has its place, but they shouldn't sling out everything else for it.

Avoid Asda in Hartlepool, unless it's improved. I was there a while back and was looking for the real ale, bearing in mind my local store stocks a good range. I asked one of the staff where the selection was, he took me to the usual range of canned fizzy beer. I pointed out I wanted the bottled beer and he just gave me a withering look as though it was completely alien question. He then pointed out two rows of European lager and said there. I left the store rather rapidly.

I'd agree that Waitrose has a better selection than Tesco. Our local Waitrose normally has a few local ales in which can't be found in the other supermarkets in town.

Having said that, Tesco in Fforestfach seemed to have a reasonable selection of Welsh ales when we were there in January.

Yes a bigger Waitrose has a good selection , lots of exclusives . Only a few in Scotland though . Morrisons usually has a few local ales , usually get a few down in England.

Oddly, when the MK Waitrose moved from the Food Centre to Oakgrove it roughly doubled in size but they barely sell anything more than they did. They've just gone for wider aisles. Which does make shopping there more pleasant, but it was just surprising they didn't take the opportunity to up the range a bit too.

I originally hail from Lancashire and still have lots of family there. After every visit, I return home with a very large clanking bag of excellent ales from Booths. More locally, Tesco is where I buy most of my beer; a combination of range and cost.

If you go on the train to the Lakes, then pop into Booths next to Windermere station and buy some for your journey home! Top tip; take a plastic cup and bottle opener with you!!! Also buy some yummy Kendal's Mint Cake covered in chocolate.

I had the misfortune of arriving at a station with a Co-op as the main retail outlet recently.

This pathetic excuse for a shop had nothing drinkeable, either in bottle or tin, only having trendy lagers, trendy ciders, trendy whatever else, and McEwans Export (since when did this come back, using up shelf space).

Much as I agree withthe Co-op's ethical ethos, if they can't stock a decent ale, they deserve to go out of business.

1. Booths.
2. Booths again, they're that good.
3. Morrisons.
4. Aldi, especially the own-brand stuff, much of which is Marston or Brains.

Morrison’s for me as it’s the only supermarket that sells the Cornish lager that I live & breathe for.
I could get it on line from the St Austell brewery but that’ll mean going without for a few days & that’ll never do.
A 10 min drive up the road & i have enough to fill my very tall fridge.
And no I don’t care if it’s more expensive.
Winner winner lager dinner!
