Be even more fun for a driver in leccy mode....2600 kW is better than 2600 hp, even more so in a 3-car.
(Assuming that there's enough current in the OHLE.........)
Yes, hadn't worked that out until I read it in MR magazine. Others saying 0-100 in 66secs uphill from Diss & that's on a 4-car..

They better be careful so as not to run out of fuel...
You can check that in cab on the screen & no doubt through remote monitoring too. Around 15% used on a return run from Norwich-Cambridge as no AC mode yet beyond Ely.

to be honest from what I've seen so far the performance of the 3 cars will be more than adequate!

True, the drive system is quite efficient, especially when comparing with the existing fleet, there's no power being wasted churning oil in a torque-converter. The 2 engines are rated at 650+ bhp each, how does that compare with the current fleet?

A class 170 has 420 bhp engine per car, so 840 bhp for a 2 car, 1260 bhp for a 3 car - versus 1300 bhp for a 3-car 755 (and 2600 bhp for the 4-car...)

Seems the 0633 Norwich - Cambridge diagram is still a 755 as I've just seen the return working through Attleborough (755410 for those that are interested), so fingers crossed nothing changes for my trip later in the week. I guess this diagram will remain as 755 now unless something unexpected occurs.
Does anyone know when more are likely to enter service? I think there's just 410 and 418 in revenue service at the moment?

I was also going to ask if any more are out this week and on what diagrams, I may have some free time to try and catch a ride (pref not to Gt Yarmouth, brrr).

Did a Flirt fail today on the Norwich to Yarmouth route?

Just saw this on JourneyCheck

12:36 Norwich to Great Yarmouth due 13:11 has been delayed at Norwich and is now 9 minutes late.

This is due to an earlier train fault.
Will be formed of 1 coach instead of 4.

755418 got swapped onto 1240 Norwich - Cambridge, and the 153 was delayed due to large number of passengers, Currently 755410 & 755418 both out

I don't know, but if the 0633 Norwich Cambridge diagram is a 755 it looks like it's having problems this morning. Late off the depot, further delayed en route and terminated at Ely running 40 minutes late and return working starting from Ely due to a train fault. According to GA Twitter.

It is (or at least was) a 755: As I caught the 08:25 Great Northern from Ely, I saw it sitting in platform 3 waiting to start its curtailed journey back to Norwich. It was blocked in by a late-running East Midlands also going to Norwich from platform 3.

Loss of power on the Stadler this morning at Attleborough but luckily a technician was waiting on the opposite platform on his way to work at Crown Point. Right place at the right time springs to mind.

Slightly surprised they haven't got travelling fitters on board in these early days - certainly the likes of the 230s have (though it seems the 230s need them rather more - oh for a 2-car diesel FLIRT for the Marston Vale! :) )

Some have had them in the back cab. ROG are on standby with their 37 at all times they are running. Would have been awkward this morning though as EMRs 0651 Liverpool was right behind.

Yes very lucky indeed and that said technician was able to fix it as I imagine they would have had no tools with them.

Signage on the Cambridge end of the platforms at Ely has now been modified.

I walked across to Cambridge station to see the 755 forming the 1109 to Norwich. It left on time. Surprisingly quiet in diesel mode, too - mostly I heard the inverter whine!

And meanwhile a long line of Flirts await their turn on the Mid Norfolk Railway to enter revenue earning service with GA...... (photo from Facebook)stadler 1.jpg

Inverter &/or traction motor whine?

I've watched / listened / ridden a few Stadler EMU Flirts in Germany last month &, IMVHO, the noise from the motor bogies was more noticeable.

It's most definitely traction motor whine, it's far louder and noticeable than the engine noise.

Although while I'm here, the engine noise is almost locomotive-esque in its own way

Which loco? ;)

(I've seen them go past from a distance, but not yet had a ride on, a 755 so I don't know what they really sound like yet)

My first thought was a 68, I assume both being Stadler products there share some equipment

The 68s are Vossloh heritage with ABB traction equipment (alternator, inverters, traction motors). The Swiss end of Stadler has traditionally used Traction System Austria (TSA) traction motors and ABB for the rest.

The flirts are rapidly looking like one of the best of the new generation.

It's a shame they weren't on the table for Northern.

Anyway... What is it about 410 and 418 that means they're in traffic while the others are not seeing use. Do they have some mods the others don't?

AIUI they are basically the first two to be accepted into service. Why others have not followed them yet however I don't know

Just had the pleasure of my first trip on a 755, the 0652 from Attleborough.
I sat at one of the raised table seats above the Jacob's bogie in the second coach. Lovely smooth ride, lots of window views (I didn't mind the window film).
Engines couldn't really be heard, a bit of vague rumbling in stations and a distant sound of thrash when accelerating away. A bit like being sat in the first or second coach of an HST. This for me is the single most outstanding feature of these trains, no diesel engines thumping away under the floor. A nice peaceful journey.
I planned to have a wander through the power unit on the way to the facilities but as it turned out they were located in the coach I'd sat in, so will save that experience for another time.
Very impressive performance, both speeding up and slowing down. Sat at each station longer than was normal, and arrived into Ely several minutes early. I imagine it's a fun unit to drive!
Minor niggles.
The wifi didn't work, logged in as usual, then my phone refused to connect to it again. Not had this problem before with GA wifi. The mobile signal must be attenuated to some degree by the window film as it dropped from 4g to voice only a lot, and at places it wouldn't usually. So connectivity was a bit poor.
The sink in the toilet needs looking at. You have to hold your hand to one side of the water spout, so it shuts off as soon as you try to get your hands wet. After about the fifth spray it refused to play any more. The soap dispenser is a pull rather than a push which is the wrong way round to my mind (and I don't like having to grasp something like that for obvious reasons).
There were a couple of panels with annoying rattles but fortunately this subsided once the engines throttled back.
Guard made a manual announcement on the approach to Ely. It sounded odd, kept cutting in and out and clipping some of the words. I deduced it works like an aviation intercom, and mutes when there is no speech to minimise the amount of static and general noise played through the speakers but it needs the squelch adjusting.
Rail/wheel droning noise was a bit louder than I was expecting. Might have been due to where I sat.

But these are all very minor niggle to me and are massively outweighed by the good features.
Also notable that the guard was always fully focused on and available forpassenger assistance, ticket checks etc without the distraction of door and despatch procedures every few minutes.

All in all it has to be the nicest regional train I've ever travelled on. Very impressive, lightyears ahead of a 15x and a decent improvement on a 170.
