All being well, another small piece of the jigsaw should fall into place tomorrow when the first TPE Instructor driver passes out on the route beyond Middlesbrough to Redcar and Saltburn using a light engine class 68. After that, the York drivers who will be taking Nova 3's there (eventually) will start route learning following a brief from the instructor. Tomorrow's paths are now in RTT, these paths are shown as freight paths, in the future they will be TPE operated:

Good to see some positive progress. I think I’m right in saying that this will be the first TPE liveried 68 north of York.

For anyone looking out for this tomorrow, I think it’s 68032 ‘Destroyer’. The loco has moved from York station onto the York Siemens Depot. ‘RealTimeTrains’ might not pick it up initially with the train probably not starting at York P SD.

Out of curiosity Is that Ed B or is he training staff on Hitachi's?

That's when the real testing starts is it? With actual passengers.
Don't expect them to be great straight out the box, they'll need time to bed in like any new rolling stock, so probably good it's only 1or 2 Mk5a sets to start with as has been said.
Full service May 2020. Maybe!

And we know why the full service of this fleet won't happen until then.

CAF delivering a poor product and missing deadlines to modify and improve said product resulting in rolling stock going into storage
350's going off lease to WMR meaning that TPE have to concentrate their efforts into training on the 802's and 397's.

So when the Mk5's finally come into service, how many diagrams it may be, it's still good for us passengers. From what I'm told, the interiors cracking.

68026 'Enterprise' is pushing it Eastwards this morning. Currently resting at Stalybridge.

5E68 05:17 Liverpool Lime Street to Scarborough passing Scarborough Terrace, York. I guess this makes me a ‘nosey trainspotter’ or worse ‘nosey loco spotter’;)

How could they be more open?

They have commercial agreements and relationships to look after - you can't expect them to come out openly and slag CAF off for being at fault for delivering a sub-par set of carriages. From what I understand, talking to someone at TPE, the legal stuff is set to rumble on.

Then you've got internal information that is going out to their staff getting leaked out on here and social media. If their staff want more information, perhaps they shouldn't spray it about on the internet when told in confidence. And yes, I appreciate that I myself have benefited from knowing a few folk at TPE.

And finally, you can't go on and slag off TPE for giving dates and not meeting them then subsequently slag them off for not giving dates of when these trains are about to enter service. Hypocrisy, Irony, whatever you want to call it. The job TPE are trying to do is bring in 3 fleets and they don't need the distraction of mis-information and nosey rail enthusiasts.
What a strange post, especially when directed towards @Ben Bow who always makes such polite, reasoned and balanced observations.

In December 2018 TPE were happy to go public about the problems with Nova 3 when braking below 8 mph, the story made the ‘Yorkshire Post’ and other regional newspapers, not just forums and the railway press. The announcements quoted official TPE sources.
https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/new...the-brakes-do-not-work-properly-1-9440997/amp

It’s my understanding (from previous posts) that a fair number of problems have arisen from the braking system, which isn’t manufactured by CAF, and was built to a TPE specification (happy to be corrected on that, if you know better).

Regarding ‘nosey trainspotters’; yes, loco hauled stock is always going to attract a lot of attention. To quote Sir Peter Parker, ‘running the railway is like heavy engineering in public’. I don’t think though that it’s just ‘trainspotters’ who are taking an interest, have a nosey at the TPE twitter stream.

Regarding your comments about TfN, I think you are right, they seem happy to stand back. I don’t work for TPE, so I can’t possibly know the unit diagrams, but I do wonder if introducing the 802 units will actually help the core route more than getting all the Nova 3 sets into traffic as soon as possible. Certainly expanding the TPE network at a time when there are so many problems on the core route seems extraordinary.

68032 confirmed on 09:55 York to Saltburn. Pic taken from Leeman Road, York adjacent to the Siemens Depot.

68028 is the fresh York ‘station cat’ having worked over from Longsight this morning on 0P68.

Cracking photo's again there @sjpowermac! and @mjn.

Just imagine how good it will be (eventually) when all 13 sets are running West to East and back, for the passengers, the enthusiasts and staff as well probably.

As a Train driver, a passenger and an enthusiast, i'm really looking forward to some proper trains again.:D

Pleased you like the pictures, a couple more and some audio entertainment below:)

In the top one, 68026 catches the eye of the fisherman. In the bottom one an 802 (boo, hiss) slips out in the background;)

I absolutely agree with you, two loco hauled trains an hour in each direction between York and Manchester, I think Flickr/Twitter/Facebook might go out of business with all the uploads that’s going to generate;)

Just saw the one called 'Destroyer' pass through Middlesbrough station this morning. Now, when will it first bring some of the carriages up there?

Interestingly, half of the Northern trains up there were 158s - the class the 185s replaced on TPE services nearly 15 years ago!

Anybody get any piccies of the first Class 68 through Middlesborough, Redcar or at Saltburn?

Had a quick look on Flickr and the only pictures of 68's at Saltburn I noticed were from 2014 and 2016!
68007 light engine on 19 September 2014
68004 and 68020 on a Network Rail test train on 27 June 2016
68005 and 68022 on a Network Rail test train on 30 July 2016

I imagine more 68's have visited Saltburn on DRS route learners and/or test trains.

Today's move was probably the first using one in TPE colours, although, strictly speaking, it was operated by FLHH. Admittedly, that is just a pedantic technicality and I stand guilty as charged!

Just caught it passing Heyrod on its way back. Didn't expect it to be loco first. Bonus.

Detail on one of the Mk5a coaches. Not sure if it’s CAF or TPE who picked up on the wrong colour of the screw, but if that’s the only snag to rectify then things are looking very good;)

The Mk5a coaches look absolutely fantastic.

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if TPE did run the 68 + stock in that path on 31st August with a driver instructor just so they could claim they did introduce them in the summer. TPE make the banks look trustworthy.

Just like the Mk3 run at the very end of 2017 to meet the franchise requirements? I think at least one of each new TPE type of train has to run before 31/12/19 anyway for the exact same reason.
