I've seen SW for the SW or South Western Franchise but some things use HY. What does HY stand for?

Some internal railway ‘operating’ systems such as the performance regimes use H-codes (followed by two digits in a **## format) for service groups. South Western has always been HY. Other types of operator such as freight, open access, metro/LUL and charters have series with other letters than H.

Lots of historical and non-operator codes also here http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/misc/business.shtm

For passenger operators, the code is attached to a pair of digits to define individual service groups. List available here http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/operators/servicegroups.shtm (open out the expanding lists to see the detail).

Interesting. Explains why my payslip has had HY in front of my pay number for the last 20 odd years....

And Bugle codes, for those who have such delight, will also notice the business code in the middle of the 4 letter code.
