Why is the fee for changing trains so high at £30 per standard ticket (£40 for standard premier), and there is NO option at all to cancel, even if it's many months before the travel date? Is there any way around this?

To answer your question, the way around it is to buy a Business Premier ticket:
Business Premier
You can change the date or time of your journey – subject to availability – free of charge, or request a full refund any time before or up to 60 days after departure - except on Netherlands routes.
Business Premier tickets to Amsterdam or Rotterdam Centraal are flexible up until departure, but you can’t exchange or get a refund after the train’s scheduled departure time.

Eurostar has adopted the airline model of higher fares = higher flexibility

Yeh I get that, but £520 for a round trip is a crazy price for business premier, however flexible it is.

Legacy airline, you mean...

All low-cost airline tickets are flexible (though you can pay a bit extra for no change fee).

Eurostar seems to have exactly the same policy as Ryanair - all tickets are changable for a fee plus the price difference.

If you need to cancel your trip and you've taken out travel insurance, you could make a claim (as long as the insurance policy cover the reason for cancellation).

Is there any way to get round it? No (or buy business), as you've effectively entered into a contract to agree to the ticket terms & conditions.

However I do have a top tip:
If you've arrived earlier at your departure station than expected and want to exchange for 1 train earlier, it can be done at Eurostar ticket offices for a flat fixed fee of £30 (or € equivalent on the continent). 1 train earlier could mean 30min saving or several hours depending what the earlier train is to the same destination. Obviously subject to seats available. This is not available online or at the ticket machines which will charge the £30+fare diff.

Free of charge was no problem at one time...……… they were happy to help. A flat fee of £30 would be more than my PRIV fare!

They were quite happy to help earlier this year at Brussels when I turned up early and asked if they could get me on an earlier train. There was no mention of a fee and I was on a pass holder fare.
Say please with a smile and you never know. Nothing to lose by asking!

Oh I'm sure if you ask the right staff at the right time, anything's possible
Brussels staff are more easygoing since they only have 1 train every hours to deal with.
Coincidentally I'm off to Brussels today, Bruges & Antwerp the rest of the week.
