I wonder if anyone can help!

My company have booked me a ticket - an Anytime Return (with a disabled railcard) From Aviemore to Edinburgh at £42.40.

I can't get to Aviemore now and have to go from Elgin (at my expense), an Anytime Return from there being £54.50.

If I appear at the booking office in Elgin with my ticket and £12.10, will I be able to purchase an excess ticket for the extra Elgin to Aviemore section?

I don't particularly want to purchase a separate single or return ticket, I see no reason why it can't be excessed up to the higher value ticket, as they're both any permitted route tickets.

You should be able to. If the ticket office cannot issue it, I'd ask on the train.

Thanks, I used to issue excess fares in the booking office, but that was 20 odd years ago in a former life! Just wanted to check they still issued them!

Cheers

It's still a thing, but some staff don't have a clue how to issue them :(

Word of caution - in most Ticket Issuing Systems it is not possible to do an excess involving a change of origin. The official type of excess is called an "over distance excess" which is designed for you travelling beyond the destination, not starting earlier.

I know StarMobile used on train does NOT allow you to alter the origin station, only the destination. StarDesktop in stations may be the same, as in theory they are meant to follow the same rules. Other systems are available which may be programmed differently.

I assume you are travelling via Inverness from Elgin to Edinburgh?

Yes, that's correct, I would have to travel by bus to Aviemore but am unable to get to platform 2 there because of mobility!

ScotRail will not help me get to platform 2 as they would have to get a taxi from Inverness (& various other reasons) So it's easier me to get the bus to Elgin instead. Then pay the excess there!

If I can!

I've been able to do it in all the systems I've used - is Star the exception?
