We are booked on a Northern Service to Manchester Airport. We have asked for help with luggage on and off the train. Understand that there are no seat reservations on this service and we will be joining mid journey. We are both over 85 years young so would find it maybe a little hard to stand for the journey. Is it just pot luck?

Where are you getting on?
If you have booked assistance I would expect the person assisting to, if at all possible, find you seats - this would, if appropriate, include asking people in priority seats to move. Whether my expectation will be met is, unfortunately, down to pot luck - far more likely to happen at some locations and at some times of the day than others.
