So I have an advance single ticket. Leeds to York. One of the 10p Northern specials.

It is marked as Specified trains and Northern Connections to York. Which is fine as I'm getting on at the main station in Leeds...

But what is a "Northern Connections"? Does this mean I could get on at any Leeds group station for a train that would get me to Leeds? eg if I was on the 0902 from Leeds to York, could I use this ticket to catch a train from say Headingly to York and then get the specified train to York?

Thanks.

Just to clarify - as far as I know these tickets are for a single direct train. There is no change during the journey to another connecting train.

No. You can only use them for the specified trains between the stations specified on the ticket.

The "and connections" is just the route field they use for a journey that may have connections involved, but in this case does not. A bit sloppy really, they should really have set the route as "Northern Only" and omitted the connections but.

Well that makes sense but it does seem a bit.. sloppy. I've never seen this before on an Advance ticket, even ones that do have a change of train mid journey.

Could it be that Northern Connect is starting to get added to the tickets? I'm not sure if Leeds to York is a Northern Connect service

If you have an advance ticket from Leeds to York you can get on at Leeds and get off at York on the specific train you've booked on. You can't choose another origin that takes your fancy.

The route field is "Northern and Connections" for those occasions where, on a different origin/destination, you might need to take a connecting train with another TOC.

With these tickets I haven't seen any journeys which allow travel on another TOC. Which is presumably why the routing specifically states Northern Connections.

The route is indeed "AP NORTHERN ONLY", but prints on new-style ticket as "Specified trains &Northern connections". Maybe it's an attempt to reduce confusion where the journey involves some non-reservable Northern Trains, which won't be specifically listed in the list of reservations on a new-style Advance ticket?

It means that you need to travel on the named train, but where your journey also involves using non named trains to get to that named one, those trains must also be northern only.

For example, if your ticket was Batley to York, and the named train specified was the 10:00 Leeds to York, your train from Batley to Leeds could be any to get you there in time, but would need to be northern.

As your ticket is from Leeds you don't require a connection to make your named train, and there are no other city centre stations to travel from.
