TRAINS will run from Skipton and Keighley to Bradford on Boxing Day for the first time in decades.

The Airedale line is among several routes across the north of England where services will operate.

Keighley MP John Grogan, who has long campaigned for Boxing Day train services, welcomes the move.

But he voices concerns that there will be no services to Leeds, where extensive work is being carried out on the station.

“The good news is that for the first time in over 40 years trains will run on Boxing Day in Yorkshire,” he said.

“The bad news is that operator Northern Rail is not running trains to Leeds because it does not control Leeds Station. We need a joined-up approach.”

A Northern spokesman told us: “As part of our franchise we have a commitment to run a small number of Boxing Day services. We’ve taken into account several considerations – including engineering work by Network Rail over Christmas – and are looking at a number of routes including Skipton-Bradford and Ilkley-Bradford."

Do you think that they will find staff willing to crew them?

For the money that’s in our contracts for Boxing Day yes there will
Glad there is a decent incentive for staff to work on Boxing Day, however, if the enhanced rate is so good, there may not be many volunteers to work on Sundays 22 and 29 December!

Northern should get Sunday working sorted out first.

Why? Boxing Day strikes me as an easy win

"Would you like lots of money for doing this one day a year?"

"Yes, please"

Sorted
And a day's holiday in lieu?

When I worked in a pharmacy I was gagging to do Xmas and Boxing days just to (a) grab a few more pounds (b) get those two days out of the way and (c) have them as proper holidays when I wanted. Win, win, win.

Probably swamped with more than they need.
Yes, presumably any TOC can raise enough volunteers for a skeleton Boxing Day service, problems & disputes seem to occur when a more comprehensive service & larger staff numbers is required eg London Underground in recent times,

Transdev's 62 bus has run quite successfully on Boxing Day for several years, although I note that this year Bradford City are away. With Christmas falling midweek this year, I suspect that there might be more than a few people with cabin fever by the 26th where family have broken up on the previous Friday.

In Edinburgh there's a core bus network on Christmas Day and a full service on the 26th; even more at New Year. After all there's a lot of other people who have to work right through.

Bradford City are away at Carlisle on Boxing Day so I really hope someone realises this and runs on the S&C even if its only a 2pm arrival into Carlisle and a 6pm return.

I think that is very unlikely. It is not just a case of finding a willing driver and guard, you need to man all the intermediate signal boxes as well.

We are not doing the annual Boxing Day debate in August and we're not doing it on this thread when Northern aren't even suggesting they'd have a problem staffing the trains that are proposed to run.

It is a very relevant debate in August if you might be asked to work.

Firstly it is highly unlikely any Carlisle trains will run because of signal box issues. But I have no idea of Networkrails input in this so can't be sure, but on the face of it they don't seem overly enthused.

Secondly, you can't just find a driver and guard and pull a train out of the sidings. You need supporting back up such as control, Maintenance control, even night cleaners to clean the trains after, I suspect this might be where the problem lies. The suggested routes are pointless, they serve nobody. Although you might be able to bribe enough staff to come in, I do think it will fall flat on it's face.

Mind you, it wouldn't surprise me if this lot tried to get the traditional strike breakers of old, the conductor standards coaches to come in.

Despite what a lot of posters on here might think. The idea is not going down too well in the messrooms.

Northern should get Sunday working sorted out first.

Sunday working east of the Pennines isn't an issue, we have already had Sunday service enhancements as a result. Indeed increased Sunday services was one of the first improvements rolled out under the new franchise.

Thread will be reopened in due course when more concrete details emerge rather than just soundbites from politicians.

I am sure he won't mention how much Northern are being "bribed" to do so with taxpayers money, but we will see.

I noticed Bradford to Skipton trains showing up in online timetables so asked National Rail and Northern Rail about them.

National Rail told me there was a problem with their app which would be fixed.

However Northern told me they would be running these services.

There's currently nothing about them on their website and Metro has produced Christmas publicity stating there will be no Boxing Day services in West Yorkshire.

I'm not sure if this is incompetence or an effort to show theres no demand for future years.

So Clifton will have more national rail services than Manchester Piccadilly, Birmingham New St, Leeds, Liverpool Lime St and most of the London terminals combined on Boxing Day
