Hi Guys,

Noticing that DB are recruiting everywhere for qualified train drivers. For people who have noticed recruitment patterns of some sort. Do you reckon it will not be long before DB push on with a trainee train driver recruitment drive any time soon ?

DB have done 2 recruitment drives for trainee drivers in the last year or so, Autumn last year was for the Southern based hubs (Dollands, Hoo, Barking, Acton etc...) and earlier this year was for the Nothern based hubs (Doncaster, Warrington, Mossend etc...)

There have been quite a few trainee courses this year and there are still people waiting in talent pools when/if further vacancies crop up so I wouldn't be too hopeful of any more trainee recruitment in the near future. You never know though...

I would be very confident.

I don't know any qualified driver that would jump to DB. They are in a pension hole and are one of the most risky companies around.

I'd question the sanity of any TOC driver going to DB under its current situation.

One from Chester went only last year. He loves it. See him fly through in the evenings on the log train.

Christ, does he not think he's getting to retirement?

My old gaff we had 3 go freight. All to freightliner. Not a single man jack from over 200 would entertain dB.

I can see them recruiting off the street for a while.

He’s only a few years away to be fair and he loves the locos. Fed up of getting abuse on the platforms so he’s gone for the quiet life to round off his career.

It's swings and roundabouts for preference of freight or pax. There's pros and cons of each.

The railway pension as a whole is unsustainable from what I've been told.

DB will still be offering a pension and if you compare it to other DC contributions, it'll be a good one. The Defined Benefits section will be closed to new entrants I understand, except those already in it who do transfer to DB. I believe GBRf are closing their DB scheme, or that's what I've heard!

I'm interested to understand why you're highly against DB, did you work for them? Why would no other people go to DB?

I'm not against them. It was the first post which was asking about trainee posts, which was countered by another mentioned qualified drivers wanting to go.

My feeling is that it's not attractive to TOC drivers in general who are virtually redundancy proof - where as I know a few lads who were offloaded by DB and taken on. I can only base it on what they told me. The lads I worked with who wanted freight went gbrf and freightliner.

The pensions for TOC's are safe for now. They have a level one covenant. It's the highest rating possible.

Freight pensions don't. This is a huge worry for plenty of frieght men and women.

No problem! I did wonder if there had just been two very similar people.

Wouldn’t have made any sense saying he goes through on the log train if he was at DB!! I just completely forgot colas existed. Haha.

DB had a level 2, which was the highest for a FOC.

Like I say, there's pros and cons for each sector and for each TOC or FOC.
