On my recent 2 week holiday in Ireland I managed to fit in a half-day trip from Westport to Ballina with my 2 grand-children who had never travelled on a train ! Class 22000 Westport-Dublin and a class 2800 on the Ballina- Manulla Junction shuttle. On departure I was pleasantly surprised to find the loco-hauled (General Motors 201 class number 214) Belmond Hibernian on Westport's platform 2, it was still there when I returned in the late afternoon. The train was well filled, with most passengers going to Dublin. Judging from the perplexed look on the booking-clerks face, very few people travel from Westport to Ballina !

Ballina's freight yard was busy, with timber and later on, just before departure for Manulla Junction at 17.00, containers from Dublin Port arrived, hauled by 071 class number 074. I had a very interesting chat with the shuttle's driver, who informed me that most of the container traffic was for the Coca Cola Concentrate factory. Adding that it supplied 40% of the Worlds production in concentrate. What a knowledgeable fellow ! We were only 6 passengers on the way in, 5 on the return ! Clearly if it was not for the freight, the future of the Ballina branch would be grim.

It is always a pleasure to travel on Iarnród Éireann. The trains are modern and clean, the staff always friendly and helpful. On the way out to Manulla Junction we enjoyed a sandwich and drink from the trolley, the guy who served us chatted to the kids ( who are French) but managed to speak a few words in English in reply.

Photos to follow shortly.

That does sound like bad news for the branch.
How convinient is the timetable for the user?
Is there scope for improvement to attract more passengers. Can it usefully fit into the western corridor?

The lack of passengers during the week would be covered by folks going "home" at the weekend.

Its a very Irish thing for anyone from the country that now lives in Dublin to go "home" to the parents every second weekend. (I know one person aged 31 that still takes his clothes home to be washed by his mum!!)

My OH is from Sligo and has been living in Dublin for 27 years (16 with me), but still goes "home" every 2-3 weekends.

The Ballina branch could fit into an expanded WRC service offering were the phase 2 works to reopen the line from Athenry to Claremorris ever funded - but don't hold your breath.

As for timetable convenience, I'd not expect any consideration from Irish Rail on that. Existing services further down the WRC don't in the main connect at all, such that it's quicker to go from Waterford to Galway via Dublin than through Limerick (or it was when I tried it last year). Madness.

A few facts to add to the original posters thoughts.

The main traffic generator for the Ballina Branch is towards Dublin. The OP travelled on the Manulla - Ballina service which took a connection off the train from Westport, not from Dublin. Traffic demand for the "Mayolink" is light.

The additional journeys between Manulla and Ballina taking connections off the trains to/from Westport were only introduced when the branch went over to DMU operation. In loco hauled days the branch train went empty to Claremorris to stable and the loco to run around. Journeys Westport - Ballina and vice versa were impossible.

The additional journeys were added to avoid the DMU layover in Manulla Jct. for long periods of time. The station doesn't even have road access to it. See http://www.irishrail.ie/media/10_dublin-westportballina.pdf for the timetable.
