Starting from Birmingham, I want to visit both Stratford-upon-Avon and also Warwick on the same day. I'll be travelling off-peak and returning back to Birmingham in the evening.

What ticket (or combination of tickets) could I buy that would allow me to do this, if I wanted to get the cheapest possible price?

Technically it's a permitted route to return from Stratford to Birmingham via Warwick - the doubleback between Hatton and Warwick (through Warwick Parkway) is permitted because all three stations are in Warwick Routeing Group. The problem is that the routeing guide says that doubling back within a routeing group is for interchange purposes only, and you might run into trouble breaking your journey at Warwick.

Thanks for the info. I'll be taking my bike with me. It probably doesn't make a difference but, because I have my bike, Warwick Parkway or Stratford-upon-Avon Parkway stations might be acceptable as they're within biking distance of those towns.

I was thinking of buying a ticket to maybe Claverdon, and go via Stratford and return via Warwick. Would that work? If it did, could I stay on the train and not get off as I pass through Claverdon?

West Midlands Daytripper with the add-on (validity to Stratford & Leamington, as well to Kidderminster)?

[As far as I'm aware both Warwick stations lack ticket gates]

In terms of routeing, the journey from Birmingham Group to Stratford U Group is valid via Warwick Group on map BI. Reaching Warwick requires a double-back between group members Warwick and Hatton (and possibly Warwick Parkway). The routeing point group rule means that this double-back is acceptable but that rule applies (according to the public-facing routeing guide) for "interchange purposes only".

RDG have never clarified exactly what "interchange purposes only" means ( and I know that forum members take different views on it's meaning.)

In any case RDG also say that "any ticket indicated for use in conjunction with a particular journey when using the Journey Planner will automatically be valid for the route and service indicated."

Journey planners have no way of enforcing the "interchange purposes only" rule and they will allow you to buy e.g a Birmingham Stations to Stratford-upon-Avon off-peak day return for £8.40 (or if needed an anytime day return at £10.00) for travel via Warwick on the return leg (including an extended break at Warwick.)

Since the off-peak and anytime day returns allow break of journey on both legs I think this should be sufficient to cover your intended journey.
