Diesel locomotive building was being undertaken by British Railways workshops at Darlington and Derby building class 25’s, Crewe building class 47’s and Swindon building class 14’s. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry class 37’s, Beyer Peacock building class 17’s and Brush were building class 47’s at Loughborough.
New locomotives:
Class 14 – D9504/05/06/07
Class 17 – D8598/99, D8600
Class 25 – D5289/90/91/92, D7597
Class 37 – D6939/40
Class 47 – D1609/10/11/12/13/14/15/16, D1754/55/59
Main line diesel production in the month decreased from the previous month to twenty five and class 25 D7597 would be the last locomotive to be built at the railway workshops at Darlington. Steam withdrawals in the month decreased significantly to only ninety four locomotives condemned (spread over forty one classes). Withdrawals this month include the first two Merchant Navy 4-6-2 pacific’s and another five BR standards were withdrawn including two class 9F 2-10-0’s 92198/99 which were less than six years old having entered traffic in October 1958. Also withdrawn was an early London Midland and Scottish Railway diesel shunter 12030 which had entered traffic in April 1942. At least one withdrawal escaped being broken up West Country 4-6-2 pacific 34027 Taw Valley.
