Quite. Umpires can make mistakes, it's therefore very important to not be silly with your reviews. For them to review just before that was beyond silly.
And of course if you do review and get it wrong Murphys Law says the ump's going to stuff it when you need it.

Or sandpapering them?
I'd more use it on his bald head just to take the shine off it.

Do not forget that the England bowling attack dismissed the Australians twice for only average innings scores in the last Test Match.
Well, both sides have very 'average' batting sides, putting it mildly. The 2005 Aussies didn't consider the Michaels Hussey and Love, Stuart Law or Simon Katich good enough to be in their touring side, let alone Test X1. The bowling sides now do compare with that series, with the obvious exception of Shane Warne.

Or Freeman, Hardy and Willis...:)
Bob Willis, yes, I remember Brian Hardie, Essex opener, too. but 'Tich' Freeman, certainly the best leg spin bowler ever to have come out of England, may be past his prime now, on account of having been dead for about a century

It's always amazing how quickly we get over things over here.
Monday: Talk about cricket.
Tuesday: Football finals* and trade whispers, Coniglio signs 7 year deal at GWS, rejecting offers at other clubs.

*The finals don't start for another week.

And if it'd gone the other way (if Paine hadn't burned that review) I'm sure you'd all be talking about it whilst we buried our heads on the sand...

No one likes to reflect on a painful loss. Particularly when it should have been a victory of humiliating proportions!

It's interesting looking at the national newspapers after a cricket loss. Here, there will be page after page of inquests into what went wrong and why; down there they pretend it didn't happen by burying the story inside.

Maybe. But it is Melbourne and footy finals are kind of a big deal in these parts.
Even if we retain the ashes in the next two tests it's going to get buried in footy news very quickly. By about the 21st of September no one will care.

It does get coverage but it gets the back page treatment. Any other time of the year it would get more coverage.

I remember being in Brisbane at the time of the Wimbledon Men's Final in 2001.

Pat Rafter was playing Goran Ivanišević in a much delayed final, and the press were full of "Our Glorious Boy is going to beat the Croatian". Of course, he lost .... I heard the result on the news at about 7.30am on the Monday morning ... in the 8.00am bulletin he didn't even get a mention!!

Depressingly sounds a bit like here. The Ashes is enough to keep the interest but in a normal season it's round about now as the Football starts up (actual Football not that strange thing you play down there) and cricket gets marginalised :frown:

Particularly now it's not available on open-access TV, other than highlights. The 2005 Ashes series would not still be talked about/ thought of nearly so much if only Sky had covered it, simply because so many fewer would have seen it. Personally, I went off ball-by-ball radio commentary years ago: couldn't stand Brian Johnston or his hangers-on.

I agree with you about the lower profile of the game since Sky took over the television contract. This has created a real contrast, as there's never been as much money in the game as there is now, but the profile is much lower!

I'd have to disagree with you about TMS, though. I really enjoy the current commentators and experts, especially the ones from overseas, who bring a different viewpoint to the matches. I'm not sure who you mean when you say "Brian Johnston or his hangers-on", but most, if not all, of the people involved then are now long gone. There's a new group involved now - go on, give it a go again, you may be surprised!

You're probably right, I should give it a go again. I'm not an Agnew fan, but he won't be on all the time and, in any case, I don't feel as strongly about him as I did about Johnston.

You should give it a go. Aggers only does tests and major one dayers, and he’s only on for 20 mins in every hour. Besides he’s a lovely bloke - knowledgeable, funny, and genuine. And the way he ribs Geoffrey is brilliant.

You've convinced me. Geoffrey I like, though he does need ribbing I agree. I can remember Geoffrey playing in glasses, certainly when he fielded: has he ever mentioned it, with recent reference to the inestimable Jack Leach? He came down from Yorkshire to play in a Sunday charity match at Bickley Park, near Bromley,, years before Sunday League cricket, and raced around the boundary. For the most part, I've always had time for him.

if you want an advert for how good Aggers can be. Here he is with McGrath and Cook commentating on the last few minutes of the last test.

TMS good. Better than what the ABC puts out these days. ABC has lost a few and the replacements are not quite up to the same standard.

We have a choice of radio at least. ABC, SEN1116 and Macquarie Sports.

Nothing can be worse than the last few years of Channel 9's commentators. That was dreadful. Healy, Clarke, Slater, Warne and god knows who else trying to fit every minute of air time with crap.

TMS is superb. it really is. The additional of People like Isha Guha & Ebony Rainford-Brent have added a different dimension and they have fitted in really well. You get some many different voices on there now.

We had Isha doing the Triple M coverage a few years back. Triple M did a much different coverage than everyone else with a much more laid back style and she fitted right in.

She's on Fox Cricket now and is just a good there. Really competent broadcaster.

Agreed. she is very good. I think she also appears on Sky and on the Channel 5 highlights show.
